A Message from the Principal
Greetings,
I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! We continue to keep our daily routine of rigorous instruction. I was pleased with how well students behaved this week. Keep encouraging this from home as the holidays approach! There is excitement in the air! We have Holiday Shop, Winter Musical and Art Show, Classroom Parties, Project Angel, Giving Tree and more! Next week our 3rd graders will take the AIRWays test to check their readiness for ILEARN in the spring. We are excited to see how they are progressing and the results will help us intervene and insure they are ready for ILEARN (which replaced ISTEP). Please make sure your child is at school on time each day. 4th graders will test the week of December 10th.
Teachers take students outside for recess whenever possible. Please insure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. Here are the guidelines teachers follow which can be found in the Student Parent Handbook on the Avon Community Schools website:
All students are expected to participate in recess and physical education. The students will go outside, except during inclement weather, and should dress appropriately (coat, hat, gloves, etc.). The schools will use the following guidelines: If the temperature with wind chill is above 15 degrees, students will have outdoor recess. If, due to injury or illness, a student cannot participate in recess and/or PE, parents must send a note (provided in the back of this handbook). If the student’s participation is restricted for more than five (5) school days, a note form a doctor must be sent to school.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Nikki Harrison
I am respectfully requesting parents and caregivers refrain from being on cell phones once students are outside or the drop off/pick up line has begun moving. We have had a few close calls where parents are not paying attention to pedestrians, usually those crossing over from the parking lot. It is imperative during drop off and pick up time drivers are not distracted. It’s simply not worth hitting a child, which would be a life-changing event. Thanks in advance for keeping everyone safe.

Maple Elementary Student Council’s spirit day raised $162.39 for Blountston Elementary in Blountston, Florida to help with Hurricane Michael recovery efforts.
The Great Big Holiday Bake Off!
Our First and Second Grade students are baking up a warm and wonderful winter program called The Great Big Holiday Bake Off! This culinary classic will be on December 13th at 6:30 PM. Students should arrive at 6:10 to their classrooms. Dress rehearsal for anyone unable to make the evening performance will be at 1:30 PM. I would love to see as many bakers as possible on stage so keep your child’s favorite apron close or be looking for good deals on aprons. It’s going to be a tasty good time!!!

Our ninth annual Multicultural Fair will be held December 14 and it is not too late to sign up! If you would like to participate, please complete the form at the end of this newsletter or contact me for details.
In January, we begin another round of sharing groups. These are groups that typically meet once a week during lunch or recess. At this time, we are prepared to offer groups on the following topics: anxiety, friendship skills, study skills, self-control and family dynamics. If you feel your child could benefit from one of these groups, please contact me. I look forward to working with you and your children this year.
Finally, the 2nd edition of 60 Seconds with Samide is available here and on my website.

Nosebleeds
If your child suffers from winter nosebleeds, try using a cold air humidifier in the child’s room at night. Saline
nose drops or petroleum jelly may also help. If severe, consult your pediatrician.
What Is Influenza (also called flu)?
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.
Signs And Symptoms Of Flu
People who have the flu often feel some or all of these signs and symptoms:
• Fever* or feeling feverish/chills
• Cough
• Sore throat
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Muscle or body aches
• Headaches
• Fatigue (very tired)
• Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
*It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.
How Flu Spreads
Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or possibly their nose.
Can My Child Go To School If He Or She Is Sick?
No. Your child should stay home to rest and to avoid giving the flu to other children or caregivers. Please contact your school site's Attendance Line to let your school know your child will be absent.
When Can My Child Go Back To School After Having The Flu?
Please keep your child home from school for at least 24 hours after their fever is gone (fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine). Fever is defined as 101 degrees or higher.
A Message from Mrs. Kendall, Title1/EL Teacher
Dear Families,
It’s hard to believe that Winter Break is right around the corner! During this time it is essential to enrich your child’s day with learning. I am putting together a winter break reading challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to provide students with fun and creative ways to read. It is not meant to be a daunting task for students or parents. Although participation is optional, I would love for all of our Maple students to participate! If your child decides to participate, have them return the completed challenge to their teacher on January 8th. You may also take a picture of your child completing one of the task and return it along with the completed challenge. Happy Reading!
Maple’s first Winter Formal will be held on January 25, 2019 from 6:00-7:30pm. Our theme will be Hollywood, so make sure to dress to impress. As well as dancing in the gym, we will also provide STEM activities in the cafeteria. Hope to see many of you there!
Sincerely,
Yael Kendall

Frequently Asked Questions
1. If my student missed picture day or is new will their photo be in the yearbook with the class? Yes, I will take any new students picture and get them added in the yearbook. The cutoff date is February 22nd.
2. Why does Maple’s yearbook cost $18.00? Maple is such a small school that we don’t have the sales volume for bigger discounts. For other schools the more they sell they get a better deal. Plus this year we added more pages 32 to 36.
3. Is there a place that a parent could upload a great photo from a school event that could be used in the yearbook? Yes, go to community.lifetouch.com. You will need the code: RHBTLY (Uploaded images will be considered for the yearbook. Please submit photos that are at least 300 dpi to ensure acceptable print quality for the yearbook. Note: Photos from social media websites may not be acceptable quality. Please consider this when uploading images.)
I am excited for this year’s memories. Let me know if you have any other questions. I am always happy to answer. Contact me by phone 317-544-6400 or email cgmason@avon-schools.org
Thanks,
Crystal Mason
