This Week's Announcements
Scholastic Book Orders
Scholastic Book Club is a fantastic and easy way to encourage your child to read, read, read! The extra benefit is that every time your child orders a book, your child’s class receives points, money, or books that support our learning! Please click on the link below and enter your child's class code to start your reading adventure!
The deadline to order books is: Friday, September 6th.
Students will be reading books of their choice every day. We anticipate they'll go through a lot of books! We have classroom libraries and the school library available, but students may also bring books from home. We want them to be reading books they love!
A good rule of thumb is between 100 points below and 50 points above their lexile level. We will be assessing lexile levels next week.
Want to order from Scholastic?
Mr. Nakano's class orders can be placed here or by clicking the banner below.

Math
This week we worked on the challenge Four 4's. See if you can solve this one (it's pretty tricky)!
The challenge is to try and find every number from 1 to 20 using only four 4’s – all four of them have to be used each time – and any operation.
Here's the start of our work as an example. See if you can find the rest!
Language Arts
This week, we started our mentor sentences. Each week, we look at a sentence from a story we are reading and break it down. Since authors are some of the best writers (they get paid for coing it), we use their sentences as a guide to create some great sounding sentences of our own!

Parent Survey
We know that every child has unique strengths, talents, and gifts. Academic brilliance is only one example of such a gift. Other examples include ambition, curiosity, persistence, organization, courage, coordination, patience, cooperation, and creativity, to name a few.
Thank you!
Data Collection
Every year, parents/guardians need to complete a process called Data Confirmation. This process is the equivalent of a first day packet and it is fully electronic - it should be completed before school starts.
This needs to be completed before students can check out library books or use Chromebooks or iPads!
The Data Confirmation process is done through your Parent Portal (https://my.iusd.org). When you log in to the Parent Portal you will see a yellow message at the top that says, "you have not completed your data confirmation...". Please take the time to read each section and acknowledge accordingly. There are important releases for your child such as field trip forms (including a walking field trip that allows our students to access the nearby park with their teacher), library book check out, and a Technology Use Agreement.
Data Confirmation needs to be done for each child in your family that attends an IUSD school. Make sure to confirm after completing each part of the confirmation and finally submitting it at the end. Here are some instructions to help you along the way: https://support.iusd.org/hc/en-us/articles/115012794048-Parent-Data-Confirmation-Instructions.
Severe Allergies
As many of you may know, allergies to peanuts, nut products, and other foods are not uncommon in our student population. If a child has a severe food allergy and comes in contact with the allergen through ingestion, inhalation, or direct contact, a severe allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis, may occur. This type of allergic reaction can be life-threatening.
Please read the letter below that helps explain how we can make our school environment safe for all of our students.
