Another great week in 4th grade! I am so thankful I have the opportunity to share my days with your kiddos! I have truly enjoyed watching them work together and trying to figure out how to find their place in our BIG class. It is not always easy having such a BIG class, but we are learning how we can use each of our strengths to support one another. I encourage you to ask your child about our morning meetings and how we are bringing positivity into our class each day. This week, we focused on Teamwork and completed some activities that helped us hone in on and build upon our communication and teamwork skills. Ask your child about the Pringles challenge. Only one team was able to successfully complete the goal, but you would all be so very proud of how well they worked together. Not one single team gave up, and I loved watching them work together and support each other. I promised I would give them another opportunity at the end of the year to try....so if your child is asking for Pringles to "practice," I do apologize. See below for some of the pictures I captured.
ELA
This week in ELA, we took our first unit assessment. Students were asked to compare and contrast poetry and prose, identify the characteristics of poetry, and summarize a new poem from Love That Dog. Next week, we should finish reading Love That Dog, and our focus will be on what inspires poets to write poetry.
Math
In math this week, we have started learning about multiplicative and additive comparisons. As we move forward, we will start learning about prime and composite numbers. Assessments from our data and graphing unit was sent home this week in Friday Folders. Please review the grades with your child and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
You can read the document below to learn about the importance of multiplication facts fluency and how you can help your child be successful.
Social Studies
This week, we dug deeper to learn more about the explorers that settled in North Carolina. We learned who actually settled in the state we call home, why they settled here, and where in North Carolina they settled. Next week, we will learn more about the different regions in North Carolina and identify how the explorers shaped the culture and society we have today.
Student Council
Forms were sent home with information about Student Council. If your child is interested in being our class representative, please let me know by August 2nd. Students will need to be ready to present their essays to the class by August 9th. Class representatives will be announced on August 16th.
Field Trips
Please check your child's purple folder for Field Trip information. Permission slips were sent home on Friday. Please make sure you return the slips by next Friday, August 2nd. This year our field trips will consist of Science Fun, Marbles, and the NC Symphony.
Prize Box
We are in need of prizes for our prize box. If you are able, please make a donation and send in with your child. Any prize that you think will motive our 4th graders, is welcome.
