SMS Motto
Fat Tuesday Celebration
Mardi Gras
Not only was the food delicious, but the presentation was over the top. The only two things that could have made the entire event better were having a longer lunch period and nap time afterward.
I'm sure that this group does not hear this enough, but THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!

Letters About Literature
2018 - 2019 Indiana Winners
Indiana students submitted over 1000 letters in the 2018 - 2019 Letters About Literature contest. Of these letters, 126 were selected by the State Judging Team to honor: 35 from Level I, 43 from Level II, and 48 from Level III. The First Place letter in each level will be submitted to the national competition.
There will be writing workshops for the students and an awards ceremony on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at the Indiana State Library to honor the winners. The ceremony will be headlined by A'Lelia Bundles, great-great-granddaughter of Madam C.J. Walker and author of All About Madam C. J. Walker. We are also excited to be joined on that day by Celeste Williams, Indiana writer and playwright, as well as Professor Watermelon, Indiana author of George and the Goblin Hole among others.
Southridge Middle School is pleased to announce that eighth grade student Braxton Cooper was named as a Level II Semifinalist. Braxton submitted a letter for the book A Dog's Journey by W. Bruce Cameron. The letter that Braxton wrote to Mr. Cameron will appear in the annual book, Letters about Literature.
CONGRATULATIONS, BRAXTON!
The Book Fair Is Coming! The Book Fair Is Coming!
Buy One, Get One Free!
This Book Fair is extremely popular with our students as it allows them to purchase an item and then get another item of equal or lesser value for FREE!
More information will be made available to the students after Spring Break.
Anything for Riley Week!
Enter Mr. Gogel. The Riley Week challenge was on! And, leave it to the eighth graders to come up with the ultimate challenge. These fun-loving and adorable students decided that funds would be raised to have Mr. Gogel walk the plank! But, there would have to be one added stipulation, of course. They couldn't be too easy on the principal because that just wouldn't be any fun. So their little heads came together and devised a plan. Mr. Gogel would walk the plank wearing a full llama costume!!! In order to carry out this challenge, students raised $300.00.
Mr. Llama mysteriously appeared sitting at Mr. Gogel's desk on Friday morning. He appeared to be getting quite a bit of work done in Mr. Gogel's absence at the time. Now Mr. Gogel, being a very practical person, began to worry just a little bit about his upcoming walk. It dawned on him that once he hit the water, that llama costume would suddenly get very wet and very heavy. Fearing that nobody would try to rescue him, Mr. Gogel did add a life jacket just to to be on the safe side!!!
As the pictures above show, Mr. Gogel took this dare very seriously minutes before that fateful plunge. It almost looks like he might be begging for mercy, but everyone knows that just wasn't going to happen. Splash.....!
The Talented Mr. Baseden
Mr. Baseden's lip sync performances are quite famous, and the students rose to the challenge.
Below is a picture from Mr. Baseden's memorable show.
As you can see, Southridge Middle School teachers go the extra mile!
