Important Information on District Finals and Quarterly Checks
!!! EXAM SCHEDULE 12/19-12/21!!!
District Finals
Semester courses have a District Final that must be administered at the end of the semester. Several courses have a district created final (ex. All PE classes, MS Art 2D, Exploratory Spanish, etc.) while other semester courses will have a teacher-created final that should be principal-approved. The District requires that HS students have 80 minutes to complete their final within a 90-minute period and MS students have 50 minutes to complete their final. This will require that we have an alternate exam schedule on 12/19, 12/20 and 12/21. I have uploaded the complete list of courses with District Finals or Principal approved finals to the Assessment folder in SharePoint. Computer based testers--Please review the UPDATED DF/QC schedule on SharePoint to see what cart you are using and if you are relocating. I have uploaded a training video for those teachers giving a District Final into SharePoint as well. Review the proctor email you received today for additional information.
Quarterly Checks
We will utilize the exam schedule on 12/19, 12/20 and 12/21 to complete Quarterly Checks for Quarter 2. The extended time during the testing period will allow us to meet all extended time accommodations within the class period. ELA and HS Math will continue to be given on the computer while Science and Social Studies will be paper-based. Paper-based Quarterly Checks can be checked out during the day on Monday December 18th from room 4-127. To meet the computer requirements for completing District Finals and Quarterly checks at the same time (minimizing the number of days on an alternate schedule), we will need to use nearly all computers on campus. Computer based testers--Please review the UPDATED DF/QC schedule on SharePoint to see what cart you are using and if you are relocating.
Ideas for Friday December 22nd
Friday December 22nd is an excellent day to remind students of the journey they have been on in your classroom this semester and make connections to where they are headed in Semester 2.
Provide students with a list of major topics from 1st semester (or ask them to generate the list). In small teams, have students make a representation (concept map, diagram/image, skit, rap, etc.) that shows how these topics are connected. Once they have represented Semester 1, provide them with some of the big topics coming in Semester 2 and see where they may place or connect these new ideas. This provides a ‘big picture’ review of their learning so far while previewing where they are headed and how it connects. I used this in my Biology classes and called it ‘The story so far…”. It was always amazing to see how creatively students could show the journey we had been on so far. Displaying and revisiting the teams work in January is a great way to start Semester 2.
Another idea is to use the HOWL expectations to have the students reflect on their own learning in your class over Semester 1. Ask them to review their notebook/work to find evidence of the HOWL expectations in the work you engaged in as a class. A quick graphic organizer can help them to think about how the HOWL expectations live in their way of work while allowing them to review the big ideas of Semester 1 and reflect. Finally, ask them to set a goal for Semester 2 based on one of the HOWL expectations. Remind them to use evidence from your course and their own work.
