Optional Workday - January 21st
Tuesday is an optional workday and the building will be open from 7:00 - 4:00. The office will not be open for families. If you plan to work, please sign in on the sheet on the front counter. Classified employees, please sign in and clock in/out as normal.
If you are not planning to work, please go ahead and put your absence in AESOP and mark it as no sub needed. Certified staff, if you choose to take NCE time, please submit hours using the electronic form and share with Paulette.
Required Workday - January 22nd
This day is a required professional development day for all staff members. Please see the spreadsheet and let Carla know if you have questions about where you should be!
Classified Staff Meeting - will be held in the media center at 1:30.
Self Care Challenge: Our Self Care Challenge has started and PAWS are filling up! Stop by the front office to document each time you took care of yourself. You’ll write your name, what you did, and color in a paw. When NCE reaches 200 filled in paws, we’ll celebrate with a staff reward! Use this google form to send ideas for what you’d like for a staff prize! Also, if you did not get an envelope for the Envelope Assistance strategy discussed at the staff meeting Tuesday, please ask Mandy.
School Leadership notes for January! Please see your SLT rep if you have any questions!
Science Kits: Kits were due on 1/17. Thank you to those teachers who have already brought their kits to the office. Mandy will schedule to have them picked up on Wednesday 1/22. If you have not brought your kit up to the office by Wednesday morning, you will have to call and schedule a pick up time yourself.
Patterns of Power Books: Mandy has put this book into all 3-5 teachers’ mailboxes for the district PD on Wednesday. This includes Spanish World teachers who have a Spanish version. Do not be intimidated by its size, most of the book is ready made lessons for you to use! This is a great resource for teaching grammar rules, can be integrated with whatever you are currently reading in class, helps with author’s purpose, and only takes 10 minutes. If you want to continue conversations in PLCs after the PD, add it to your agendas. Here is the video Carmen made and the powerpoint Mandy made if you’d like some background information and example videos before the PD on Wednesday. Grades 1-2 we do have books for you if you are interested in learning about the program, add it to your PLC agenda!
I/E PLCs with Darlene: We have scheduled our dates to have Darlene join us for our i/e PLC conversations. Please ensure all your benchmarking is complete by your date. We are hoping these will be extended PLCs and will send you information soon.
Wednesday, January 29th -- 4th/2nd/1st with Darlene
Tuesday February 4th -- 5th/3rd/K with Darlene
IStation benchmarking window is the whole month of January (1/6/20 - 1/31/20)
Spanish and English must be completed for MOY for DL classes
If something goes wrong when a student is testing and you feel the student needs to repeat the test -- Do NOT just assign an on demand assessment for a student to do the ISIP MOY benchmark again without talking to Mandy first. We will be tracking these “invalidations”.
STAR math needs to be completed by February 1st by grades 1 -5.
iReady MOY diagnostic window is January 14 - January 31
Praise Walks: Praise Walks have started! You may have noticed 1st grade teachers walking around this past week to observe their colleagues and leaving behind a note. There are so many great things happening in classrooms daily and we want everyone to have a chance to see them and steal any ideas! We are looking to raise the praise and will work hard to not be disruptive! If your grade level has not yet chosen a date to have your praise walk, please add it to your PLC agendas to discuss. Please notice the scheduled praise walks below so you are not caught off guard when your colleagues come into your room:
Tuesday, February 11 -- 5th Grade Praise Walks from 8:10 - 9:00 AM
Thursday, February 13 -- 3rd Grade Praise Walks from 9:15 - 10:05 AM
Thursday, February 27th -- 2nd Grade Praise Walks from 12:30 - 1:15
ASIS Walkthrough: We will have the first of our ASIS walkthroughs before the end of February! The one before Winter Break was cancelled. Do your thing and be proud to show off the great things your class/grade level are working on!
Upcoming Observations: (see the information given at the beginning of the year)
Certified staff on comprehensive and standard cycle- your next observation is unannounced and a pre-conference isn’t required. We will begin these soon!
Consider completing a Positive Office Referral this week!

Coming Soon…. We look forward to having time to sit and talk with all certified staff members! We will look at data and hear about plans for the Spring Semester. Conferences will be held the 2nd and 3rd week in February! A calendar will be coming soon!
IStation Updates:
Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) UPDATES:
5th Grade does not appear to have access to ORF right now and we are problem solving with Daphne Terry and IStation to determine if it is a Clever issue or an IStation issue. Mandy will notify you when we know more information. Until you hear from Mandy, 5th grade does not need to worry about ORF.
2nd - 4th Grades please don’t stress out over ORF! There seems to be kinks that are still being worked out at multiple levels. IStation will score your students for you. BUT, it will only give you a “words correct per minute” score. You will not be able to see your students’ errors or self corrections. You can only see those if you override the auto correct and score the ORF yourself. We are not requiring anyone to do this unless you want that information to use for your small group instruction. The only thing we are asking is for you to check that your computer DID score each student. We’ve noticed that sometimes it just doesn’t do it. If the computer did not score your student, please score it yourself.
The student’s Oral Reading Fluency score is calculated by taking the 3 recorded passages
for each assessment period and averaging the top 2 scores.
The ORF results will be visible everywhere ISIP subtest results are displayed. However, there are no goals or ranges or levels or cut off scores at this time because IStation is still norming the test. So, again, NO STRESS! :)
ORF REMINDERS:
Grades K-1 you do not need to do ORF
Grade 2 -- You will need to ORF all of your students except your really high readers.
Grades 3 - 4 - You will only need to ORF the lowest 20% of your students. This should also include students that are already in a fluency i/e group or students you have concerns about their fluency.
If you are the fluency teacher for an i/e group in grades 2-4, you should administer the ORF benchmark during an i/e block. Please discuss with your i/e students’ teachers about this to ensure you are on the same page.
IStation’s directions document for ORF if interested.
The icon for the ORF is in Clever. It will be a separate icon in your students’ clever page next to the IStation ISIP icon.
The ORF is NOT included in the overall reading score OR what is evaluated by EVAAS
Students will log into ORF using the new separate icon. They will use their computer and headphones to hear directions and read aloud to the computer. The computer will score their work for you. If you want to listen to your student reading and score the ORF yourself, you can do that as many times as you’d like.
If you are interested in learning about how to access and use ORF see the information below:
Important Dates for the End of Quarter:
End of the Quarter - Friday, January 17th
Third - Fifth Teachers - Grades Due to Evonne at 8am on 1/27

The purpose of this is to help provide another set of eyes before sending home. 3-5 report cards are reviewed before they are put in teachers boxes.
