Principal’s Message - February 26th, 2021
Dear Hornung Parents,
Book Fair Reminder:
The Book Fair is still going on now through March 7th! Here is the Virtual Link again for your family to join in on the fun...https://www.scholastic.com/bf/hornungelementaryschool1. In addition, we have Teacher Wish Lists for classroom books available at this link here. We can’t wait to “see” you at the Fair!
March is Reading Month:
March is Reading Month starts on Monday!
This year’s reading theme is “Reading is a Sweet Treat for your Imagination”! With a special thank you to our PTO and “Oh My Lolli” for providing a sweet treat for all our students!
We are super excited to have so many activities going on in and around Hornung to promote reading! Each classroom will have their own reading challenges, and there will be weekly prizes for students to enter into our library drawing for posters or books. There will be 1 winner from every classroom each week. A total of 88 winners! In addition, here is our Library reading challenge calendar (attached). These will be handed out to students during their Library time. If the students complete this, they can bring it to the STEAM Center during their Library time at the beginning of April to get their picture taken for the Reading Wall of Fame, and receive a pencil and bookmark.
*Note for BVA Students:
You can participate in the Reading Challenge Calendar too! Follow along with us, and email this completed calendar during the first week in April to me (richardst@brightonk12.com), along with a headshot for our Reading Wall of Fame. I will have a box of pencils and bookmarks available for pickup on the table by the main entrance.
Happy Reading!
Mrs. Richards
Sincerely, Jack Yates

PTO Buzz
The next Hornung PTO Meeting will be on March 10th at 9:30am. We hope you will login and join us for this Zoom meeting.
Our Silent Auction will be going live on March 10th through the 21st. A big thanks to all of you who are putting together the classroom baskets and to those of you who helped fill to them with great items.
A follow-up from our holiday fundraisers. We raised $1,122.60 for Gleaners to provide 3,368 meals to families in need. Our Bountiful Harvest drive collected 316 pounds of food too. Thank you all for supporting the community and the cause!
Thank you to everyone that supported Kindness week by purchasing this year's shirt! With the focus of this year - the idea was to "BRIGHTEN" up the schools through color.
Ivory Vines presented checks to 3 very amazing charities:
The Sunflower Project received $1700
The Carl Nagy Foundation received $2200
NAMI, Livingston County received $1700
All possible due to our great community and the support of our BAS families. Each charity was extremely grateful for the support.

Counselor Corner
Welcome to February, families! Here we are again with another month and another lesson topic for classrooms. We will be visiting students to talk about Empathy and standing in the shoes of others. By looking at multiple perspectives, we can gain a better understanding of how our actions impact others and the world around us. We will discuss how others feel and where they are coming from. This provides a way to learn what we can do to help our family, friends, and peers when they need us most.
Lets Connect: If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed here at school.
More Resources: We also have our BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home!
