Mrs. Loppnow's News & Notes
Week of May 14, 2018
A Note from Mrs. Loppnow:
Hello Parents!
This week the students started out dressed as Hawaiians for Luau and Lei day and ended up eating Popsicles on the Playground for P day! We have enjoyed our daily celebrations as we look to the end of our school year.
DON'T FORGET: Tuesday is the field trip to the Children's Theater. Don't forget to bring a bag lunch, unless you ordered one from the lunchroom.
Just a reminder that I will be out of the classroom from May 22-25, traveling to Tennessee with my son, Nathan. Mrs. Cavanaugh will be here while I am gone. I know the kids will continue to show integrity and respect while I am away! If you have immediate concerns, please contact Mrs. Skeates in the Red Rock office at 615-425-5601. She will get messages to the Mrs. Cavanaugh and the students!
Enjoy your weekend!

A Peek into this week and next!
Writer's Workshop/Content/Reader's Workshop:
ANCIENT EGYPT INTEGRATED UNIT
This was another fun week learning about Egypt! We focused much of our learning around pyramids, tombs, and mummies! Did you know the Great Pyramid of Giza was built in 2500 BC and took more than 20 years to construct? Egyptians are amazing!
Our week "wrap up" was just that...we literally wrapped some kids up! Learning all about mummification lent itself to the mummy wrap game! The students were challenged to use toilet paper to not only wrap one of their group members, but to also wrap special "amulets" for protection within the folds of the "linen" (OK, toilet paper). See below for some pictures!
Next week the students will be practicing some excavating of their own and will participate in activities related to the Egyptian Cinderella.
MUMMY MANIA!!!
MATH SPOTLIGHT STRATEGY
This week's SPOTLIGHT STRATEGY is...EGYPTIAN NUMBER SYSTEM!
Give the fractions problems a try! Bring it in to show me for a little treat!
REMINDERS & REQUESTS:
CHAPERONES: The two lucky "winners" to chaperone our trip to the Children's Theater are Sandra Dickie and Heather Kelly. Unfortunately, our next field trip to the Fun Zone does NOT require chaperones (we like the kids to focus on their friends on this trip!)...HOWEVER, there is another opportunity for helping...
- VOLUNTEERS: Minute to Win It!! Thank you for everyone who stepped up to volunteer! 8:15-9:15 (Heather Larson, Kathleen Downie, Cory & Maureen Neises). 10:15-11:15 (Bridgett Gawlik, Carin Norman, Heather Kelly, Nissa Fougner). And, 12:30-1:15 (Krista Applebee, Sandra Dickie, Ying Zhang, Kyle Falconbury).
Reading Baseball LOG: This month is "Spring Reading Training"! Although we are busy during the evenings with sports and extra-fun stuff, it is the PERFECT time to continue to build reading stamina which will help maintain growth during the summer months. Challenge yourself to read 30 minutes per night. There are a lot of options for earning "points" including completing some reading responses. YOU CAN DO IT!
