Principal's Message
Hello Sunset Lake Families,
Happy March is Reading Month!
This month seems like a short one with our half days and spring break just around the corner. We are planning to help our kiddos still feel the MAGIC of reading though all month long. Mrs. Shook, our librarian has created some great scavenger hunts of books that took place all this week. Be sure to ask your child all about it. We also had a great Magic assembly last Friday to kick off our special magical month of reading.
Families, I have included an article on the topic of bullying. Please take a look to learn how we can partner with one another to to help ensure all students understand the importance of making Sunset Lake bully-free.
CAREER DAY is COMING!!
Miss Brooks and our Family Lighthouse Team are still looking for some careers to fill in for our upcoming Career Day April 14th. PLEASE consider sharing your special trade and career with our Sunset Lake students to help them connect school and the outside world.
Lost and Found: Our lost and found is growing again! We will be donating our items in Lost and Found after spring break. We have included photos of our latest items. Please have your child take a peek next week to claim any of their items.
Have a great weekend everyone.
Don't forget to spring your clocks forward Saturday night!
Thank you Sunset Lake!
Yours in Learning,
Amie McCaw

Please continue to send in your child's boots and snow pants each day.
*ALSO-- please write your child's name in their coats and pants to help us match the lost and found items with the right child. By the way-- if you are missing something please remind your child to check out our lost and found.
Thank you for your support!!
Learning the Facts About Bullying
Making sure that ALL of our students feel safe and secure each school day is a priority for us at Sunset Lake Elementary. Helping students find their voice and giving them strategies when they run into conflicts is an important part of a school's anti-bullying program. At Sunset Lake, Ms. Brooks teaches anti-bullying lessons in our classrooms and our staff help our students learn strategies of Stop and Pause and Thinking Win-Win. But as they say, it takes a Village. The article from HealthyChidren.org
shares strategies for families to help their children learn how to handle conflicts and make sure they do not find themselves a victim of bullying.

Safety Training
Safety Training
I wanted to share a little about our safety training since families have asked me about our Sunset Lake protocols.
We conduct two tornado drills, five fire drills and three lockdown drills each year. Our alarm and intercom systems were recently upgraded to help us with communication. We have also purchased additional radios to improve classroom and office communication.
Our Safety Response Officer and local fire department partner with us in our drills to give us feedback and support.
Our district follows the ALICE program and staff were trained this year by going through scenarios as a team and through video modules and assessments.
ALICE stands for
Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Evacuate
ALICE has been adopted across the nation by police departments, schools, health organizations, businesses and more to help equip people and students to respond to emergency situations.

Tech Devices at School
Use of Tech Devices: Please note in order to limit interruptions to our instructional school day, we do not allow students to use personal phones or text devices during the school day. If a child needs to contact a parent/guardian during the day they are to ask their teacher. It recently has come to our attention that students have new watches with a text feature. If your child has a watch with this feature please be sure to communicate to them that texting while at school is not allowed.

THINGS TO KNOW
Things to Know:
- Communication regarding the end of the day for your child must be communicated by 3:00 to help our office and teachers be prepared for your child's end-of-day plan.
- Our Sunset Lake Office # 321-1500.
- When dropping off or picking up your child, please be sure to use one of our designated pedestrian walk-ways outlined with yellow paint. This helps keep our cars moving and helps limit the number of people between cars.

Free & Reduced Meal Application
IMPORTANT REMINDER: For the past two years school meals were funded through state grants and families were not asked to complete a Free & Reduced Meal Application. This year the state is no longer fully funding school meals so families must complete school meal applications once again. We encourage all families to complete a form to help ensure our school gets the proper funding from both state and federal agencies. The application is linked below, so please take the time to complete your family application. Thank You!
All families please fill out a free and reduced-price meal application at this link
We thank you in advance for your cooperation!
