Updated EOC Testing Dates and Reminders~

There is a correction to the English testing dates below:

March 30-English I (1st years)

April 1-English II (2nd years)

Lunch on English EOC Testing Day:
On your child's English EOC testing day, testers will eat lunch in their testing space. Learners need to bring a sack lunch. There will not be access to microwaves or drink machines. If you buy school lunch, or want to order a sack lunch from the cafeteria, you must order NO LATER THAN 9:30am this Friday morning. The majority of our learners placed their school sack lunches today. Please confirm with your child their sack lunch plan for their day of English EOC testing.

First Years Update

The first years are working on the final steps of their fourth project of the year: Lights, Camera, Action! They have spent the past month reading a play by William Shakespeare and investigating current events. They are now combining everything they have learned to create a video trailer for a modern mini-series that is based on their play and set in a current event. Additionally, they are exploring how conic sections and waves can help them broadcast these videos and taking pictures with pinhole cameras in order to create promotional materials. Join us on the evening of Friday, April 17, here at the Academy for a special drive-in movie event to see the first years’ trailers! Bring your blankets, lawn chairs, and radios! PTSA will set up a concession stand so you can get the full movie experience and “go to the lobby.” We look forward to seeing you!

The facilitators will be hosting Studio Nights from 4:30-7:30 designed to give learners opportunities to film, edit and produce their trailers on Tuesdays 3/21, 4/7, and 4/14.

Fox 4's Richard Ray to mentor 1st Years tomorrow!

Currently co-anchor the weekend newscasts: Saturday 6 & 9pm, Sunday 5 & 9pm, Richard Ray also does a weekly travel and recreation feature called "Lone Star Adventures" and periodic documentary and special projects. He will be coaching our learners in their ability to tell a great story in film on 3/26!

Second Years Update

Last Friday 2nd Year learners met with Gearbox representatives to discuss the games they have developed. The mentorship from Gearbox employees, UTD ATEC graduate students and instructors has proved beneficial to the successful completion of the project.

Learners created product ideas and Help Wanted posters to solicit votes for their next project. The products with the most votes will be developed in their final project for the year.

On April 21st learners will visit the Lyle School of Engineering at SMU. Please make sure your learner has turned in the signed field trip form this week.

Third Years Update

The third year team launched their final project, Decision Room, on March 16th with a visit to the George W. Bush Presidential Library at SMU. While at the library, learners experienced the Decision Points Theater. Soon their teams of four will be adopting presidents and designing Decision Room experiences of their own. Monday March 23rd saw the third years out of the building again as they visited Plano Outdoor Learning Center. While there, the students learned about internship and capstone project opportunities, water sampling, soil testing, and got all kids wet and muddy! The coming weeks will not see us out of the building any more, but will provide ample time for diving deep into the developing content of this project.

Has your learner bought tickets to the dance?
