1. American industrial revolution
A period of major industrialization; took place during the early 1700s and 1800s.
2. Laissez Faire
The idea that the government had to leave businesses and the economy alone and not touch it.
3. Trust
A large business with significant market power.
4. Robber Baron
Wealthy and powerful business men who used ruthless business tactics.
5. Vertical Integration
This is when a company owns all of the different businesses and all aspects of production and delivery.
6. Horizontal Integration
When a company takes over or buys out a competitor to gain market share.
7. Political machines
Informal political groups designed to keep power.
8. Ellis island
In the New York harbor; served as a processing center for immigrants arriving from the East Coast.
9. Tenements
Dark, crowded? Multi-family apartments.
10. Ethnic enclaves
An area that had a high ethnic concentration.
11. Nativism
A preference of native born people and the desire to limit immigrants.
12. Gilded Age
Corporations and populations growing a long with a lot of crime and more.
13. Social Darwinism
The social order is accounted as the product of natural selection.
14. Americanization
Immigrants went through this in order to become an American with American beliefs.
15. Populist party
A party for common people such as farmers.
16. Gospel of wealth
An article describing the responsibility of philanthropy.
17. Social gospel movement
A religious movement to tie good works and salvation together.
18. Progressivism
A broad philosophy based on the idea of progress.
19. Muckraker
People who search for and expose real or alleged scandal, or corruption.

An American philanthropist and business magnate.
21. Andrew Carnegie
Scottish immigrant who made a fortune in the steel industry.

An American financier.

An American business magnate who built his wealth with shipping and railroads.

Founder of the Ford Motor Company.

A federal law passed in 1890 that committed the American government to opposing monopolies.

The amendment that gives congress the power to collect taxes.
37. 17th Amendment
Established the popular election of the United States senator.
38. 18th Amendment
Banned the sale and drinking of alcohol.
39. 19th Amendment
Guarantees all American women the right to vote.
