Read to Achieve & K-3 Istation Testing Information

Read to Achieve is a program created in Legislation approved by the North Carolina General Assembly in July, 2012. The program consists of components for improving reading proficiency for students in kindergarten through third grade. Legislation states that K-3 students shall be assessed with a valid and reliable, formative and diagnostic reading assessments. North Carolina has selected Istation as the state's reading assessment for students in K-3, beginning with the 2019-2020 school year. Istation helps to identify students' abilities in phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Wake County Public Schools will begin using this assessment for the middle of the year benchmarking period which occurs in January for traditional calendar schools.

There is an Istation parent portal which provides 24-7 access to:

  • a personalized data profile of your child's progress
  • supplemental learning materials and games for home use
  • interactive books.

In the coming days, you will receive information from your child's teacher regarding Istation and the steps you will need to take to activate your parent portal account. You may also visit our website for more specific information pertaining to Istation and the benchmarking window.

ACCESS Testing for ESL/ELL Students

ACCESS testing for students identified as English Language Learners will begin in late January. The testing window will run from January 27 through March 6th. If your child has been identified as needing to complete the ACCESS testing, you will receive more information before the assessment window opens.

On Friday December 13, all ECS students grades K-5th, got to enjoy a program from the NC Museum of Natural Sciences Outreach Programs, sponsored by the school PTA Cultural Arts. They met some of the Museum’s animal ambassadors and learned about their characteristics, adaptations, and the roles they play in our environment. Students were invited to touch live animals and ask questions to the Museum animal expert. Ask your ECS student which animal they enjoyed most petting or learning about!

Just before the holiday break on December 17-19, our 5th grade students enjoyed a 3-day workshop led by Natalie and Alfredo (a Purple Heart Wounded Warrior) from the Black Box Dance Theater company. They learned about the Revolutionary War by composing dances and songs to express and better understand themes related to that historic event. Ask your 5th grade student which part of the workshop they liked best: composing, dancing, singing, working as team, talking to a veteran about his personal experience.
