End of Year Band Placement Auditions for 6th and 7th graders
End of Year Band Placement Audition
6th and 7th Grade
It is that time of year when we begin planning for the next school year. We will hear every Reynolds 6th and 7th grade Band student individually on the below phases. This plus their entire school year's progress will determine what band class they will be placed in.
Students will audition individually the week of May 4th during their band class period.
Each Phase is a test grade and all students will play for a director.
Phase 1: Major Scales - Without Arpeggios
Required Concert Bb, Eb, Ab, and F
Additional scales are encouraged to be played
Phase 2: Chromatic Scale
Phase 3: Etude
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How are band placements decided and who decides what band my child is in?
A: Band placements are based on student performance throughout the school year. This audition is only a small part of the process. The band directors continuously evaluate students on a number of criteria including class performance, behavior, preparation, practice time outside of class, and overall dedication to the instrument throughout the school year
Q: What are the differences in the ensembles?
A: The biggest difference in ensembles is the pace at which the class moves. If a student is placed in a class that moves “too quickly”, music can become overwhelming and is no longer fun. Reversely, if a student is placed in a class that moves “too slowly”, things can also become less fun. We take each students’ placement seriously and find the best fit for each student to experience the most success.
Q: Is there a chance my student can move to a more advanced ensemble?
A: Your student’s success is our top priority. We continuously evaluate each student throughout the year. Students who move ensembles must show significant development in playing ability.
Q: My student earned a 100% in band. Why are they in the ---- band?
A: The grade is based on commitment and participation in the class. Band placement is based on ability and development throughout the previous year.
Q: My student is in 8th grade. Why are they not in the top ensemble?
A: Band placement is based on ability and development throughout the previous year. Students are placed in bands where they will be most successful.
