Ms. Healey's Second Grade Class

May 2016

Message to Parents

The end of the school year is fast approaching! May is certainly a busy month ahead with many end of the year activities. Thank you for all that you have done this year to support your child inside and outside of the classroom. This bright group of kids are ready for 3rd grade and it's been amazing to watch them grow and mature this year!

Second grade has finished planting their garden that was a part of a $500 CHEF (Collins Hills Educational Foundation) grant awarded to Dr. Howard. The kids have enjoyed learning about plants and their needs, and that gardening is hard work! We will continue to go outside to water and tend to our plants. We also have a butterfly kit in our room. Our caterpillars are now in their chrysalis stage and next week they should be emerging into monarch butterflies. We will release them into the garden when they're ready!

I Can Statements..

Math: I can review second grade skills from this year (place value, telling time, counting coins, graphing, fractions, adding and subtracting within 1,000)

Literacy: I can identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain or describe. I can actively participate in reader's theaters with my classmates.

Word work/spelling: I can review and correctly spell the first one hundred Fry words.

Writing: I can write an informational piece on a plant or animal life cycle. I can write a letter to future second graders that includes a greeting, a body, and a closing.

Social Studies: I can determine a good and a service. I can identify needs and wants, and spending and saving choices.

Track in the Back Fun Run

On Wednesday, May 4th, second grade will be participating in a fun run on the playground outside during their specials at 9:45-10:30. Each grade level will participate during their specials time. Every student will have a lanyard around their neck with a paper attached. As the kids run laps, teachers will mark of the number of laps each child has run on their individual lanyard. Students are encouraged to ask for sponsors and donations to help raise money for a track on the playground. Currently, Walnut Grove has raised $9,000 and the total estimated cost for the track is $36,000. Please consider sponsoring money for this cause! Parents are welcome to attend the event.

End of the year party

Our end of the year party is scheduled for Tuesday, May 24th from 12:30-1:30. Our party plans are currently in the works and will be communicated to parents once our room mom, Kellie Wall and I finalize the plans. Parents are invited to celebrate the end of the year with us!
