Philosophical Viewpoints----Reality

Thematic Look at "Reality" in 1984

Reality is Relative.

In the book 1984, reality is in the eye of the beholder. The government, or the Party as it is referred to in the book, has complete control over the history, lives of the people, and the minds of the people as well. The Party can add or delete events from the past. They can erase or create people depending on how they see fit; but most of all, they control the minds of all the citizens, making reality distorted and untrue. People choose to see their own reality and choose to view the world the way they want...or well, the way the Party wants them to see the world.

Quotes about Reality

"Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past."

Past, present, and future is all that life is made of. If a single person or group can control any of these aspects, then they have the power to alter reality.

"We control matter because we control the mind. Reality is inside the skull..."

Controlling one's mind means you control their reality. You can control what they think, feel, say or do...and there would be nothing they can do to stop you.

"Nonsense. The Earth is as old as we are, no older. How could it be older? Nothing exists except through human consciousness."

If a person feels like something does not exist, does it? A big question with many debatable answers. Reality is relative, if someone believes that fairies exist then they do. If someone does not believe that Santa Claus exists then he does not. Reality is all how people look at life...but is also easily manipulated and subject to change.

Think About It...

Reality is what people know and what people can see or something they believe in. Everyone's reality exists only to the extent of their mind...reality is relative; but alterable.
