Happy Friday, Lil Steamer Families!
October 25, 2019
From the desk of: Principal Hoese
Each day in the morning announcements, I say to every student "If someone hasn't told you today they love you, I'm telling you... Mr. Hoese loves you!" Feedback from the students, teachers, and parents has been overwhelmingly positive at how impactful that has been.
So on Friday, October 25 which was Principal Appreciation Day (which I had no idea of since I've been so busy lately), Mrs. Steele's 2B class flipped the script on me. I entered her room in the morning assuming I was headed there to handle a student discipline issue.
Instead, I was greeted by smiling faces, individual signs, and a large sign that read, "Mr. Hoese, In case no one told you today... WE LOVE YOU!" It was signed by the entire 2B class as well.
I immediately had something in both of my eyes as they began to water. A round of hugs later, I was given a book titled "Why 2B Loves Mr. Hoese", written and illustrated by the students in 2B in honor of National Principal's Day - October 25, 2019.
And, if that wasn't enough, a bag of salted almonds with a note that read "We're NUTS about you!" Thank you Mrs. Steele and the 2B class -- this is a memory that I will treasure forever. I also received some wonderful gifts from colleagues and students today as well; I'm very fortunate to be surrounding by such wonderful people.
Education is more than the curriculum. Education involves teaching students to be good people, care for others, and express gratitude.
Remember always to tell your children you love them each morning and each night -- even if they already know it -- regardless of their age. They need to have that verbal reminder to let them know they are on the right path. And sometimes principals need that reminder, too :)
SRO Leitzen's Tip of the Week!
MUST READ: Colder Weather Approaches
The weather is changing and the days are getting cooler. Winter will soon be here! Students will go outside before and after school and for recesses as long as the temperature/wind chill remains above 20 degrees and it is not raining. Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately with coats, hats, and gloves or mittens. Children without boots or snow pants must remain on the black top when there is snow.

It is important that we encourage our children to express their feelings. Here are some more ways that you can help your child learn about and express their feelings:
Identify feelings in others-Provide lots of opportunities to identify feelings in others. You might ask your child to reflect on what someone else may be feeling. Cartoons or picture books are a great way to discuss feelings and help kids learn how to recognize other people’s feelings through facial expressions.
Be a role model-Kids learn about feelings and how to express them appropriately by watching others. Show your child how you’re feeling about different situations and how you deal with those feelings.
Encourage with praise-Praise your child when they talk about their feelings or express them in an appropriate way.
Listen to your child’s feelings-Stay present and resist the urge to make your child’s bad feelings go away. Support your child to identify and express their feelings so they are heard. When feelings are minimised, they will often be expressed in unhealthy ways.
FES Hosts First Live Stream of the Lil Steamer News!
On Friday, October 25, the first ever Lil Steamer News of our morning announcements was live streamed! 5th grader Makenna Kampe and Mr. Hoese were able to utilize the STEAM lab setup that Mr. Ryan Dail made ready (with his own equipment). We are now looking at options to purchase our own needed equipment and eventually expand the use for students!
Speech and Language News: Mrs. Beveroth
What are the warning signs that my child may have problems with language?
Language is how we use words to share ideas and get what we want. Language is broken down into receptive skills (what we understand) and expressive skills (saying what we want, need, or think). Warning signs that there may be a problem with language include:
Ø 3 years:
o Limited talking; frustration when trying to communicate
o Difficulty naming objects and answering simple questions
o Produces only 1-2 word phrases
Ø 4 years:
o Produces only 1-3 word phrases
o Difficulty asking questions/finding words to express thoughts
Ø 5 years:
o Uses only simple sentences
o Difficulty telling stories
o Difficulty following directions
Ø School Age:
o Difficulty following complex directions
o Does not produce complex sentences
o Sentences have grammar errors
o Limited vocabulary compared to peers
If you have any questions or are concerned about your child’s speech/language skills, please contact me by email at lbeveroth@riverbendschools.net or by phone at 815-589-2911.
2019 Classroom Kindness Challenge
In 2C we are participating in the 2019 Classroom Kindness Challenge. The challenge is sponsored by WQAD Channel 8 News. To complete the challenge we must all participate in the 12 acts of kindness on the kindness challenge board. Our class has been doing things such as holding doors for others, cleaning up after ourselves and sharing compliments and smiles. We have also had discussions on how to make our classroom a “No Bully Zone”. We hope to complete the 12 acts of kindness next week and make 2C a great place to be!

3rd Graders taste tested four favorite fall apple flavors - Granny Smith , Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and Envy! Twins? Or just coincidence? You be the judge!

Enter the Bat Cave at FES!
First Graders enjoyed a day in the bat cave! After a full week learning about bats, the first graders stepped into the bat cave for science, math, and art activities all about bats.
Veterans Day
We are looking for Veterans who would be willing to come into the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes on Friday, November 8 beginning at approximately 12:30pm. We are hoping to find Veterans who would speak about the branch of the military that they have served or are serving in, how long they have served or are currently serving, and a memory or story that they would like to share. This time can also include an opportunity for the students to ask questions. We are hoping to give our Veterans an opportunity to speak about their experiences in a smaller setting. Each Veteran would be assigned to a grade level (3, 4, or 5) and would spend about 15 minutes in each homeroom section for that grade. Each Veteran would speak to approximately 20-27 students at a time. Following this time devoted to hearing from our Veterans, the entire school will participate in a tribute to the Veterans and their service to our country.
A note for people to sign up was sent home with the youngest in each family at the elementary school. If you did not receive this, and you are or have someone interested in participating, please contact the school.
If you have any questions, you can contact Mrs. Alexander, Mrs. Marten, Mrs. Strehlow, or Mr. Hoese at (815)589-2911.
