Happy Valentine's Day!
Our Motto: Teaching the Mind...Nourishing the Soul
Theme for the Year - TRUTH
At St. Joseph Catholic School, we are striving to become missionary disciples by revealing the Truth of Christ to others through our actions.
Our Mission and Vision Statements
Mission:
St. Joseph Catholic School provides students with a safe and prayerful learning environment, enveloped by an intimate community of active and faithful families.
Vision:
Catholic schools in the Diocese of Fort Worth are committed to opening the doors so that our students can reach further than the walls that would otherwise enclose them and therefore are able to recognize and cherish the eternal and transcendental goods of Truth, Beauty, and Goodness.
From the Principal
Happy Valentine's Day, Knight families! I hope you have all enjoyed your day. I know this morning's drop-off was full of anticipation for the day's sharing of treats and sweets with one another. The smiles were as abundant as the color red!
As you know, St. Joseph is undergoing an accreditation visit next week. The Faculty and Staff have been hard at work preparing for the team of five to arrive on Sunday evening. I thank you in advance for helping us to welcome our special visitors. We are excited to share with them our beautiful school!
In Christ's service,
Diane Price, M.Ed.L.
Principal
Thank you, Ms. Arias, for finding this beautiful blessing to share with the school!

Stephen Breen Basketball Tournament and T-shirts
The Stephen Breen Basketball Tournament is held annually at St. Andrew Catholic School, with 6th & 7th grade teams from around the Diocese participating. All proceeds benefit the Stephen Breen Memorial Foundation.
The Stephen Breen Memorial Foundation is committed to offering financial aid to local children who seek the strength and values of a Catholic education and to those courageous children and their families whose lives are afflicted with cancer.
All Diocesan 6th, 7th and 8th grade basketball player names are listed on the back of the shirt. What a great keepsake! T-shirt sales benefit a great cause.
You can support the Stephen Breen Foundation by purchasing a tournament t-shirt AND you will receive FREE ADMISSION to the tournament when wearing your shirt. Shirts can be shipped to your homes or picked up from SAS during the tournament.

An Open Road to Communication
Is it true that some people are easier to talk to than others? When I was a teenager… perhaps centuries ago… we had a clear way of responding to obvious questions like this: “Duh!”
Certain people have a way about them that leaves us feeling we can share our deepest thoughts and concerns. We feel safe, knowing they will never reject us or freak out in any way.
How important is it that we remain this type of person to our kids? Does this increase the likelihood they’ll make good decisions about drugs, alcohol, dating, driving, their education, and the variety of nursing home they eventually select for us?
Our kids observe us with keen eyes and ears, subconsciously evaluating whether we are someone with whom they can share their lives. The more tests we pass, the more likely they’ll come to us when they are hurting or facing temptation. Discussed below are three common tests.
Test: Are you going to freak out?
A dad described how his son started early: “At age seven, he nonchalantly approached me and said, ‘I don’t think telling the truth is so important. Lying isn’t a big deal.’”
This father continued, “I was so thankful for Love and Logic, because it taught me to avoid losing it in these situations. I just replied, ‘Thanks for sharing your opinion,’ and I walked away. Over the years, I’ve noticed that this is his way of seeing if I’ll get upset.”
Test: Do you really care?
It can also be harmful to remain silent over important values. As parents, we have an obligation to guide our kids. One strategy for doing so involves listening to their opinion and then asking questions about possible consequences. For example, “I appreciate you sharing that with me. Do you think that __________________ might happen if a person did that?”
Test: Do you really believe in me?
Lectures poison relationships. They do so because they communicate a lack of belief in others.
Some of the messages they send are, “I don’t believe you are capable of evaluating the potential consequences of the choices you face. I’m not sure you are bright enough to learn from the mistakes you make. I don’t trust that you can learn without being told multiple times.”
When we use fewer words, and more thoughtful questions, we send a far more empowering message:
“If any kid could figure out how to make healthy decisions
about this, you’d be that kid!”
Test anxiety can be debilitating. That’s why it’s best to remember that you don’t have to always and perfectly pass each of these tests to raise great kids. The key is demonstrating the desire and the drive to improve each and every day.

Safe Environment Training
You must first create a profile in VIRTUS for the Safe Environment Diocesan Program.
Per the Diocese, all school volunteers if they are current on Safe Environment, will have until 7/31/19 to renew through VIRTUS if you do not expire before that date. You need to go on the VIRTUS website and make a profile. You can do this without signing up for a class. Profiles are needed in the new system so we know you have previous training, as the old database is no longer open for viewing.
