Aiming to Keep You Informed

September 18, 2020

From the Office

We would like to thank everyone who participated in our Curriculum Night Livestream Q&A last night! From creating teacher video presentations to answering questions on a Youtube livestream, this whole process was new for our staff. As you can imagine, it was on the one hand exciting to learn and try something new, and on the other hand a little nerve racking.😀 We believe our teachers did a fantastic job and we truly appreciate your support of our staff!

Bus Routes & Stops

While we all anxiously await local health metrics to allow for the return of middle school students, we thought it would be helpful for parents and students to have the most updated Bus Route information so you can be prepared. Student schedules with Bus Routes included, along with a separate list of AM and PM stops, are being mailed home next week. If riding the school bus is your child's preferred method of transportation this school year, please review the stop locations for when we are able to return to in-person learning. Please keep in mind that when we are able to return to in-person instruction at Westfield, it will most likely be under an A/B format with roughly 50% of students on campus each day. Some students and their families may also opt for Full Remote learning. Therefore, the bus passenger count could be reduced significantly on any given day from what is printed on the bus route sheet.

MAP Assessments

As in previous years, we do plan to assess student progress using the MAP Assessment for both Language Arts and Mathematics in grades 6th - 8th. MAP testing at Westfield typically occurs 3 times a year, during Fall, Winter, and Spring. We are currently working with NWEA MAP to finalize plans to administer the MAP test in a remote format for the Fall session. We are tentatively looking at the week of September 28th for Fall MAP testing at Westfield. The exact dates will be published in advance and teachers will provide students with details and specific procedures prior to the test date.

MAP testing is used to assess individual student academic progress and inform teachers of how best to support their students. We know that any type of test can trigger stress and anxiety. It may be helpful to remind your child that MAP tests are not designed to have participants answer every question correctly. Rather, questions are provided based on the student's individual performance on the previous question, in an effort to accurately identify each student's individual understanding of key standards and concepts. The data provided to staff from NWEA MAP allows teachers to carefully plan their instruction in order to meet the individual needs of our students. Regardless of a student's score, the most important part of the score is that it accurately reflects each student's current level of understanding. Please encourage your child to simply do their best to answer the questions.

Attendance Procedures

In an effort to keep parents informed of their child's attendance patterns, we record both tardies and absences in PowerSchool. School District 13 is required by the State of Illinois and the DuPage County Regional Office of Education to keep track of student attendance and report chronic truancy.

During Remote Learning, we realize there are unique circumstances that may affect a child's ability to attend classes or arrive on time. Our goal at Westfield is to work together with parents to support student learning. Having an accurate record of a child's attendance is important in determining appropriate interventions.

Parents, please contact the Main Office and report any class period absences, including full day absences and Doctor appointments that require only partial absences. Additionally, see the "Technology" section below for information on the PowerSchool App and attendance notifications. Thank you!

Attention 6th Grade Parents

This year, we will be using Otus as the platform to provide 6th grade students with feedback as it pertains to Standards-based grading and reporting. Starting next week, 6th Grade teachers will help students create their accounts in Otus. Parents will also receive information to access the Otus platform once student accounts are created.

Have a wonderful weekend!

SUPPLY PICKUP: Wednesday, September 23 2-5pm

We will hold a supply pick up on September 23 from 2-5pm. At this time, all 6th grade students will have supplies to pick up for math and science. If other teachers have items for students, the teachers will be in contact to let students know who will need to come pick up supplies.

Supply pick up will be the same process as earlier this year: students will be asked to wear a mask in the building, as well as, socially distance. They will enter at the back of the school gym at door 27 then exit the building at door 30 in the front of the gym. Car traffic will be able to come into the back lot, drop off their student then drive to the front lot to pick up their student.
