From Mr. Clemente
Dear Winter Park Band families,
Wow, what a great week of band! Congratulations to all our WP Band students who rehearsed and performed with the 2022-2023 OCPS All-County Bands last week. It was so awesome to watch our students work with our amazing clinicians - Dr. Catherine Rand & Dr. Chandler Wilson - and the week culminated with outstanding performances on Saturday in the WPHS Auditorium. This week we welcome Mr. Keith Galasso to our campus Monday, January 30 and Tuesday, January 31 to work with Freshman Jazz Band, Jazz Ensemble II, and Jazz Ensemble I for our annual Jazz Guest Conductor Workshop. Each band will get to spend class both days working with Mr. Galasso, along with each band having one after school rehearsal. The Workshop culminates with our Jazz Pre-MPA Concert on Tuesday, January 31 at 7 PM in the Auditorium. Looking forward to seeing you there for some great jazz!
The annual Winter Park Band DOOR-2-DOOR Fundraiser is THIS SATURDAY, February 4! This event is our biggest fundraiser of the year and has invaluable impact on the finances of the Band program. Participation is required for all students enrolled in all Band classes - concert band, jazz band, and color guard. Students arrive in the Band room at 8 AM to get dressed in either their marching band uniform or concert uniform if they are not in marching band. A light breakfast and full lunch will be provided to keep the students fueled throughout the day, and students must bring their water jug with them for hydration. It's a fun day to hang around with friends and work to build the future of the Winter Park Band!
All students should be squared away with an accompanist for Solo & Ensemble if you are performing a solo that requires accompaniment. Anyone who is performing in an ensemble should have a schedule of rehearsals set with your fellow ensemble members to be sure you are prepared to perform in early February. We will be discussing S&E frequently in class over the coming weeks, and everyone must have a copy of their S&E music with them daily in their Band folder. Please do not hesitate to ask Mr. Smith and me questions concerning preparation for S&E - the earlier you ask, the more we can help! Later this week, we will release the schedule for students to sign up for one of their hearings with either Mr. Clemente or Mr. Smith. Remember, part of the assignment is that we need to hear you twice before S&E!
Let’s make it a great week!
Mr. Clemente

From the Band Booster President, Mrs. Dana Adkinson
- If you have contacts with large-scale donors, corporations or foundations that may be able to assist with underwriting even a small portion of our Carnegie Hall trip, please contact Heather Ribaric, me or the directors with that information.
- Now begins the crunch to prep for Door-to-Door, the year’s biggest fundraiser for the band! Please see Robyn Fodor's message below in this newsletter for specific info on that. We do need 5 (yes, 5) more volunteers for our February 4th day of door to door-ing. Even if your child insists that you don’t enter his or her world, this is the ONE time to ignore that plea. The success of our Door to Door fundraiser is directly proportionate to the number of bodies that work that fundraiser on that day .. the more feet we have walking door to door (driven in cars by fabulous parents!), the greater the funds raised. You just have to drive a car full of sweet band kids around .. super easy! Contact Heather to submit copies of your driver’s license and car insurance info and with any questions (ribaric.family@gmail.com)

DOOR-2-DOOR - IT'S HERE!
Door-to-Door is here! Drivers are set, students are paired up so we are almost ready to go! Those that signed up to drive, if you did not get my email sent this past week, please email me and let me know. Drivers will get more specific directions next week. Plan on being at the high school in the orchestra room by 8:15am for a meeting at 8:30am. If your ability to drive for us should change at any time in the next 2 weeks, please let me know ASAP! There are many moving parts and pieces for the day to run smoothly for all. Thank you for volunteering to drive for us!

SOLO & ENSEMBLE MPA - Continuing to Move Toward Performance Quality!
WHAT'S NEXT
Students now have selected their pieces, formed their ensembles, and should be setting about preparing for February's performance at Solo & Ensemble. If a student chooses to play a solo, they are responsible for providing a piano accompanist. If you are in search of an accompanist, please consult this list of piano accompanists on the Band website. Students who have not secured an accompanist need to see Mr. Clemente and Mr. Smith immediately.
Students should have their Solo& Ensemble music with them in their music folder each day for class.
Band students have two performance options to complete the Solo and Ensemble project:
- Option 1: Solo and Ensemble MPA. Solo and Ensemble MPA takes place each year at the beginning of February and is hosted by a school in our district, this year Horizon HS on February 10 and 11. This event is put on by the Florida Bandmasters Association(FBA), and allows students to perform for an adjudicator for a rating. Adjudicators for this event are professors, teachers, and performers from across the state of Florida, and students have the opportunity to receive feedback on their performance from someone who is an expert on their instrument. Students perform either a solo or chamber ensemble piece from the FBA Solo and Ensemble Required Music List, and may perform in up to 4 different events. The Band program pays for the event registration for all participating students.
- Option 2: Solo and Ensemble Recital Option. For students who choose not to perform at the Solo and Ensemble MPA put on by FBA, those students will perform as part of our Solo and Ensemble Recital at school. This year, that recital will take place in the Band Room on Wednesday, February 5, beginning at 1:30 PM. Students must select a piece from the FBA Solo and Ensemble Required Music List, and the performances will be adjudicated by both Mr. Smith and Mr. Clemente. Ms. Young would adjudicate color guard solos.
