Varsity Volleyball Team Takes First!
Varsity Volleyball - Coach Cleveland
The varsity volleyball had a busy week of competition! The girls were on the road competing at Basehor-Linwood, Leavenworth and wrapped up the week at Anderson County for a tournament. The girls played nine matches in four days with only one loss to Spring Hill.
Starting the week at the Basehor-Linwood triangular, the Cards took on Baldwin and Basehor-Linwood High School. First match of the night was against the bulldogs. The Cardinals faced the bulldogs twice already this season and both matches resulted in a win. To start the match, the cards got off to a slow start. Our serve receive passing was off and offensively we struggled to stay in-system. Throughout the first two sets, we rode a rollercoaster ride. The score of the first two sets were 26-24, 22-25 and had to go to a third set. Starting the third set, we made adjustments in serve-receive and our senior attackers, Jayla Pierce and Lauren Mitchell took over. Both ladies aggressively put away several attacks. The cards won the last set and the match with a final score of 25-16. Outside hitter, Lauren Mitchell (12) finished the night with 22 kills.
Second match of the night, the Cardinals faced Basehor-Linwood. In the past four years, the Cardinals competed against Basehor and struggled to bring home a victory. Not this time though… The Cardinals rallied in a tough three set match and beat the Bobcats! The first ball of the match was served aggressively by junior Sadie Walker to the bobcat serve-receive. The bobcat defense passed a perfect ball right to their setter. Senior middle Jayla Pierce was ready to shut down the bobcats' go-to attacker and she did! It was just the spark that the Cardinal defense needed. Throughout the entire first set, the Cardinal defense dominated and won the first set 25-19. Junior defensive specialist Mallory Vickers did a fantastic job of digging up several attacks. Second set of the match the Cardinals struggled early in serve receive. We were stuck in two rotations for 10 points and dug ourselves a hole early. We unfortunately lost the second set 15-25. During the entire third set, we traded several points back and forth. We once again served aggressively and played great defense. Offensively, several attackers were able to find weaknesses in the Basehor defense. The Cardinals won the third set 25-23 and the match!
Quad at Leavenworth
Last Thursday, the Cardinals went 2-1 at Leavenworth. The ladies defeated both Leavenworth 25-23, 25-16 and KC East 25-4, 25-8 in two sets and unfortunately lost to Spring Hill. Overall, the ladies had a good night of competition and all eight varsity players did a fantastic job. Our middles, Jayla Pierce (12) and Josie Pickett (10) both took a lot of reps in the back court on defense and serve receive. Leading the way for the Cardinal offense was Lauren Mitchell (12) and Sophia Ewy (11).
Saturday Tournament
On Saturday, the Cardinals traveled to Anderson County for the Wellsville Tournament. The tournament was split into two locations and we competed against Anderson Co, Olpe and Santa Fe Trail. Overall, it was a great day for the Cardinals defeating all three teams in two sets. Besides our six starters, a handful of ladies coming off the bench contributed valuable minutes and played great defense. Sophomore defensive specialist Audrey Shain passed great in serve receive while juniors’ Mallory Vickers and Abby Watson dug up several attacks from the opposing team. On the offensive side of the net, all of the Cardinal attackers did a fantastic job of putting away several balls set by junior setter Emma Durr. The Cardinals finished the day undefeated and took 1st place. Scores on the day: Olpe (25-14, 25-23), Santa Fe Trail (25-13, 25-17), Anderson Co (25-12, 25-15) and Olpe (25-19, 25-19)

The Eudora Cardinals faced off against the Louisburg Wildcats in an old school defensive battle on Friday night. The game was reminiscent of the 1970s or 1980s with the Wildcats running the wishbone offense and the Cardinals running the flexbone.
The Cards were up 8-6 at half before falling 8-14. There were several bright spots in the game and it came down to the wire. The lone score came on a 30 yard touchdown catch by Silas Etter (11), who juked 5 Wildcats on the way to the endzone. QB Zeke Reazin (12) ran in the 2 point conversion. The Cardinals had an opportunity to win the game in the final minutes of play, but a holding call negated a 1st down that would have most likely resulted in a touchdown. The Wildcats then were forced to 4th and 5 with 1 minute left before the Cardinals jumped offsides, negating their chance to get the ball back.
The Cardinals, who were averaging 264 rushing yards a game, were held to only 117 yards on the night by the tough Wildcat defense. The offense was only given 6 total possessions on the night when they are averaging 10 per game. This is what the Louisburg defense is designed to do.
The Cardinal Defense was very good all night, and was led in tackles by Nate Criqui (12) who had 18 tackles, 5 of which were for a loss. Cael Lynch (12) added 17 tackles and 1 fumble recovery.
The coaching staff is very proud of how the team competed all night. They were finally in a battle against a really good team, and even though it didn’t go their way, the team got better. The Cardinals travel to Ottawa this Friday to take on the Cyclones at 7pm.

Last night before the game in my classroom, we had a little "come to Jesus" meeting. I laid everything out for the boys. Our upcoming schedule and the teams records. Our Win-loss-tie record and the combined records of the teams we have beat and the combined record of the teams we have lost to. When doing this it was really eye opening for the boys. I have been telling them we aren't as good as they think right now. We can be but we aren't. After putting this all in front of them I challenged them. I wanted to see how they would respond to the challenge. I'd say getting up 4-0 in the first 15-20 minutes was a pretty good response. Senior Aron Mackall got us on the board with a great crack from about 22 yards out that deflected into the net off an assist from Keaton. Dylan Meier (12th) got goal number 2 as he curled a corner directly into the side netting on the back post. Aron (12th) got our third off a cracker of a goal off a one touch volley. I believe Alex Kooken (12th) got this assist. Jack Kleinweber (12th) got the fourth and our final goal of the first half when he caught the keeper out and he hit a banger from about 30 out. After this we kind of took the foot off the gas and allowed them back in the game. Senior goalie Devon Moncrief had to make several really good saves in the first half to keep them at zero. They finally got one back with about 9 left in the half when we decided not to mark a guy right in the middle of the box. At half we talked about the let down and about some of the arguing that we had going on the field. In the second half, the arguing didn't stop. So 5 minutes in we removed the arguing from the game and we started to play a lot better. Devon still had to make a few good saves but the defense was much more organized and made it much more difficult for them. We started to get things back our way about 15 minutes in. We created several chances and their keeper had to make some good saves to keep us from scoring. We got our fifth goal when a ball was crossed in and Keaton Herrron (12th) got on the ball and then played the ball back across to a wide open Colby Lawhorn (12th) for a tap in. The score was now 5-2 and was pretty much the nail in the coffin. We had to make adjustments because we went down to 10 men. The boys handled this adjustment well.
I was proud of the boys in how hard they played. We played a few guys more minutes than usual because of injuries and discipline reasons. At one point we were down 6 starters. Just goes to show how deep we are and some of those guys earned even more trust to be on the field at anytime. Senior Garrett Folks and junior Garrett Shoemaker stepped up big along with seniors Holden Andrews and Hayden Willems. We had Parker Hurla (10th) playing left back for maybe the first time ever. We still need to get things cleaned up and we have 8 days of practice to get better before we finish the season like this.
Louisburg 7-0 number 1 in 4A
Miege 2-3-1 number 3 in 4A and 4X defending state champs
Heritage Christian 8-1 number 2 in 4A
Ottawa 3-4 but greatly improved
Tonganoxie 7-1 number 5 in 4A
Like I said it will be a tough road ahead so we better bring it! But it's an awesome challenge and will prepare us for the playoffs much more so than the first 9 games have. I'm excited and it's a great time to be a Eudora Cardinal Soccer player!

10/02/2020 @BVNW
I told the boys before the game that we were going to get scored on twice. I just had a feeling that we would be caught off guard at some point in the game. When the first half started we looked really good. We were looking to high press and get up the field. The ball did not cross into our half all that much and when it did, our back line did a really good job of breaking down the attacker and winning the ball. We put away two goals in the first half. Issac Winder (9th) got the first goal and Terek Stoll (10th) got the second. At half we went over our shape and then talked about our energy. I still told them that I felt BVNW was going to score at some point so it is up to us to keep playing hard and don't take our foot off the gas. We came out in the second half and our shape was just non-existent and we had very little energy. They got their first goal off of a corner. The ball went out of play and we were getting marked and set and we just didn't seem to be in a hurry. We turned off for half a second and the kid hit a great ball and it went straight into the side net from the corner. They scored again and after that we did not respond well. We had a couple chances late in the game but just could not connect enough passes in the final third.
10/05/2020 De Soto
Going into this game I felt really good. The boys seemed to have a lot of energy and looked good during warm ups. The first half was tough for us. We were going into the wind and I was not sure if we were going to be able to get the ball down and connect passes against the wind. It turns out we may play better when we are going against the wind. I thought the boys had some fantastic moments in the first half. We looked like the better team for most of the first half, we just could not connect that final ball behind De Soto's back line. At half I told the boys that they are only doing one thing better than us. They wanted to win the 50/50 balls more than us. Ultimately we just were not aggressive enough and didn't win enough loose balls. We stopped talking and De Soto scored three goals. I don't feel like they did anything special, I think we just got lost due to lack of communication and they finished the chances they had. Hopefully moving forward we can keep possessing the ball and hopefully start being more aggressive and winning the 50/50 balls. Our next game is against Louisburg at home on Thursday 10/08/2020
