Beach Buddies' Bulletin
February 27-March 3, 2017
Greetings from Kindergarten! Amazing that we have jumped into March already. Here is an update mainly from Ms. Curtis with a few additions from Mrs. Z.
Math Workshop
In math workshop this week we have been learning how to exchange money, examined the quarter, made number stories, and divided things in half to make them even. We have been having fun in math tubs counting by 5's, subtracting from 10, and counting coins.
Writers' Workshop
In writer's workshop we have been working hard on our how-to books. We went back and checked if our how-to books missed any steps. We also have been working on adding amounts and labels to our how-to books.
Readers' Workshop
In reader's workshop we have been working on fixing up our understanding. We are going back and rereading if we did not understand something. We are also working on big ideas of books. We have been writing these down in our notebook and using these big ideas to summarize the books.
Guest Reader
On Thursday we had a special guest reader- Miss Michelle from preschool! We loved seeing her pop up books.
Read Aloud and Community Writing
In honor of the birthday of Dr. Seuss, we have been reading Dr. Seuss books. We have read The Cat and The Hat, Oh, The Places You'll Go, and The Lorax. We have noticed that Dr. Seuss likes his rhymes! We have been making our own silly rhymes for some sight words and our own names. We also did Dr. Seuss themed stations on Friday.
Science Fun
We loved making elephant toothpaste! We worked on making predictions about what would happen before the experiment and writing down what we saw happen. Some of the kids were asking for the recipe for the experiment. This is what we used when we made ours:
In other literacy learning, we...
-have been working on writing and spelling new words in our word packets
-added a new Dr. Seuss poem to our poem books
-read through a new reader's theater book about the sea
-practiced fluency in our reading and not "reading like a robot"
Author visit
On Thursday we were lucky enough to have MN author David Larochelle visit AES. He gave us a wonderful presentation filled with storytelling and his own experiences as an author and illustrator. Our favorite David Larochelle book is Moo. You can check out Moo along with his other books on his website: http://www.davidlarochelle.com/
Care Center
Our March visit has been changed to Tuesday, March 14. We would love some extra ears and eyes for our visit. Can you join us? We will be gone from about 8:50-10:00. You can even meet us there if that is easier. Thanks for considering.
Como Zoo
It is hard to believe, but our Como Zoo trip will be here before we know it. We will visit the zoo on Friday, May 12. Remember, each kindergartner can bring a parent on this trip. We will need a background check done before the trip if you haven't done so already. This simple form can be completed at the AES office or I can send one home for you. Thanks for planning ahead so you don't miss out of the fun. Just respond to this email to let me know if you need a form sent home.
