Wauwatosa Montessori School
April 12, 2019
What a wild ride this week has been with weather - from 70 and sunny on Monday, to snow boots and frigid winds on Wednesday. Please continue to make sure you are checking the weather daily and assume that your child(ren) will be going outside for recess and has all appropriate gear. We make every effort to give the students some fresh air and movement daily, so even as the ground may be wet from rain or a bit muddy, please be sure your child has the appropriate items for recess each day!
Our second Family Listening Session will take place Thursday, May 9, 2019, 6:00 - 7:30 pm in room 13. This meeting will be lead again by Tracy Carus, the instructional equity coach. The purpose is to recap what was shared at the first meeting and the steps that have been taken already based on what we heard. Then we will open the floor to more sharing on the same two questions:
What positive experiences have you or your child had at Montessori?
What challenging experiences have you or your child had at Montessori?
This will be followed by discussions in small groups of 4 to 5 people around solutions and next steps. We encourage you to attend this meeting, because all voices deserve to be heard. Right At School will be staffing childcare for this event. Please fill out this Google Doc if you need childcare for children ages 4-13 during the meeting so they can plan accordingly: https://forms.gle/Tu2GpViGZWtNrXcs6 All childcare requests must be entered by May 3rd.
We are happy to welcome Dr. Michael Mazius to Wauwatosa Montessori for the second time this school year. Dr. Mazius presented in early January on the topic of technology and how to co-engage with your child to help them build self-control, balance and good judgement with technology. On Tuesday, April 23rd from 6:30-7:30pm in Room 13, Dr. Mazius will give a presentation on Helping Our Children Develop A Moral Identity: Effective Parenting Practices -Perhaps now, more than ever, we, parents, have an obligation to teach our children how to empathize with others. All children, even very young ones, have the capacity to empathize and show compassion. Whether or not they will, actually may have quite a bit to do with the way in which we rear them. Please join Dr. Michael Mazius, Child Psychologist, for a talk on the ways in which we can raise empathic children and the cultural dynamics we and our kids presently are up against. We hope you can join us!
Sincerely,
Ms. Imperiale
Principal

WMS Service Society
Our last volunteer event of the year will be on Saturday, June 1st from 9am-12pm at Kyle’s Korner in Wauwatosa for students in 4th-8th grades.
“Kyle's Korner is dedicated to helping grieving children, teens and their families who are coping with the loss of a loved one. In our special home, The Reiman Center for Grieving Children, Teens and Their Families, we offer peer support groups that provide the opportunity to draw strength from others who have had similar experiences and share similar feelings. We offer a place to retreat and focus on building hope for the future, while journeying through the healing process in a safe and supportive environment.
Our support groups are always free. We are funded solely by donations of individuals, businesses, foundations, and civic and other groups. We receive no state or federal funding, or third party reimbursement. Our thanks to all who support our mission.”
Kyle’s Korner staff will provide an overview of their agency as well as a tour. At the request of Kyle’s Korner staff, students will help to beautify the landscape to make it a more inviting environment for children and families. Students will also be assisting with upkeep and cleaning the inside of the home as well. Please see their website below for more information on the great work that they do. Stay tuned for a sign-up coming in May! https://www.kyleskorner.org
