Heart Health Month
Not only is February the month of love, it’s also Heart Health Month!
February is American Heart Month! Across the country people are raising awareness about heart disease and what can be done to prevent it. Here at Hicks, we are no different! A heart facts bulletin board is displayed in the gym so students, as well as teachers and parents, are aware of how the heart works, why it is so important, and what we can do to ensure we all have strong and healthy hearts for life! Check out these heart healthy tips!
Heart Healthy Tips

About the Heart
The heart is the most powerful and strong muscle in the entire body. Unlike our arm or leg muscles that get tired after working for a while, our heart muscles is ALWAYS working and NEVER gets tired! It is constantly beating…even while we sleep!
This very essential part of our body has an important job, it is the pump that moves blood all around our bodies. Our blood is made up of tiny little red blood cells that act like delivery trucks in our bodies. Their job is to pick up important things (such as oxygen!) and take it all over the body where it is needed. We are learning that these little blood cells can’t move on their own, and that’s why the heart is so important!
Our heart’s constant beating and pumping moves the blood cells through the pathways of arteries and veins all through our body. When our heart is strong and healthy, it can do this job much better than if it is sick and not working properly. By taking care of our heart, we improve the health of our whole body.
Heart Heroes
We would like to thank all of our students who participated in the Jump Rope for heart fundraiser. This year Hicks raised $3,258.73 for the American Heart Association!!
Congratulations to our top fundraiser...

Parents How Much Exercise Is Enough?
Parents should make sure that their kids get enough exercise. So, how much is enough? Kids and teens should get 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily.
Toddlers and preschool children should play actively several times a day. Toddlers should get at least 60 minutes active play every day and preschoolers should have at least 120 minutes active play every day. This time should include planned, adult-led physical activity and unstructured active free play.
Young children should not be inactive for long periods of time — no more than 1 hour unless they're sleeping. And school-age children should not be inactive for periods longer than 2 hours.
