Welcome, Miss Valentine--New Kindergarten Teacher
Families,
Due to unexpected late resident kindergarten enrollments immediately prior to opening day and into the first two weeks of school, the district recognized a need to open an additional kindergarten section for this school year. We are excited to announce that we have posted and successfully hired a new, highly qualified and impactful kindergarten teacher, Miss Michelle Valentine.
Communication has already been sent to families that will be a part of Miss Valentine's new kindergarten class. If you did not receive that communication (via email, phone, or letter in student backpack), then your child will remain in his/her current kindergarten class. Miss Valentine will begin teaching the new kindergarten section on Monday, October 2nd.
For those parents that have students going into the new class with Miss Valentine, we ask that you have conversations with your students about this transition as soon as possible. Our staff will also talk to your child about this transition to help make it as smooth as possible.
Michelle Valentine was selected after a rigorous search that included many highly skilled candidates. With several years of kindergarten teaching experience already under her belt, Michelle brings a lively, energetic, and positive demeanor to our Doherty Family. You can read more about her by clicking this link.
This will prove to be an excellent addition to our Doherty Family. It reduces the current kindergarten classes by an average of 4 students per class. This increases the amount of attention your child will receive on a daily basis, ensuring an even great year of development for your child. Since determining that a new kindergarten section was necessary, we implemented an intentional plan that increased teacher aid support and limited transitions to ensure a continued strong start to the year.
Students and families that will be a part of Miss Valentine's class will have the chance to meet her on Thursday, September 28th from 6 to 6:30 PM at Doherty Elementary.

This is your chance for some freedom, parents! Drop your kids off at Lifetime so that you can enjoy some quiet time, some shopping time, or even a nice meal. The kids have a blast at Lifetime, while you have a moment to yourself. Treat yourself--you deserve it. Best of all, a portion of the proceeds go to Doherty!
The cost is $30 per child (with $20 for each additional child in a family). Pre-registration through Doherty is required. Registration forms will be sent home with students, or they can be picked up in the office.
Fun Run Coming Soon
The actual event will take place from 8:45-11:15 AM, with classes participating in 30 minute time slots.
Trivia Night/Blessings in a Backpack
Come and join us for a fun filled evening of food, laughter, and Trivia as we raise funds for Blessings in a Backpack--West Bloomfield/Keego Harbor!! A $25 ticket or sponsorship package allows you to share your Trivia knowledge with your table of ten team members and the chance to win prizes and raffles!! At the same time you will be helping to raise funds to feed hungry children in our community.
Blessings in a Backpack is a program that sends 6 non perishable meals home with hungry children in the West Bloomfield Schools each weekend of the school year.
Volunteers order, pack, and deliver food purchased at a discount from Meijer each week to our elementary schools at the cost of just over $100 per child for the year. With over 280 kids on our roles last year, we have to raise around $30,000 to pay the food bill and even more funding is needed this year so that we can add the students in our two middle schools to the program.
Please join us on Friday, November 10th at Santia Hall. Tickets can be purchased online and more information is available at this website (click here)
Sponsorships are also available on line or by contacting katherinesheiko@hotmail.com or (248)521-0074.
Parenting on the Go
In addition to having access to this great resource, the Doherty PTO could earn $500 for having the most people view one of the 8 videos and then take the survey on the website (see link above).

PTO Spirit Wear
PTO Spirit Wear
Welcome back to school! The PTO is very excited about this years 2017-2018 spirit wear!
We are doing things a little differently this year. ALL spirit wear orders will be done ONLINE only. We have attached a link to the webstore for easy ordering below.
You will be VERY excited about the quality of the shirts this year; they are triple washed vintage feel cotton, and the sweatshirts are amazingly soft.
This year, there are boys and girls shirt styles that start at small/size 6, as well as juniors, men's, women's, and a few toddler choices as well--all of which fit true to size!
The adult sweatshirts run in men's sizes. Women should order one size down. Kids sweatshirts also run a little large. The size small fits like a child's size 7.
The deadline for ordering spirit wear online is Wednesday, September 20th. The shirts will arrive by the 3rd week of October and will be delivered directly to your child's classroom!
Plese click the following link to order your spirit wear today. Once you click the link below, please choose "Doherty Elementary" in the yellow left margin, and you will see our store.
If you have any questions, please contact me at dohertypto@gmail.com.
Thank You,
