Welcome back 6th graders! We missed you!!! We almost have a full week of school. We have a half day on Tuesday and I will be testing, so I won't be seeing most of my classes that day.
There seems to be some confusion about the Reading Log. Your child is expected to read or be read to everyday K-3 for 15 minutes a day and 4-6 for 30 minutes per day. Please ensure that your child completes this. Just like in a sport, you can't improve unless you are actually practicing your skills. Reading is a skill. Reading only at school is not enough! Even if you are reading to your child, please have him/her read part a book that is on-level for part of the reading time. This will improve your child's own reading fluency. After your child reads, please sign the reading log.

5th and 6th Grade Reading
3rd and 4th Grade Math
Due to the half day we will have no class on Tuesday. This week we will begin a unit on properties of addition. We will be focusing on the associative property, commutative property, and the identity property. Monday we will make a foldable with definitions, images, and examples as a resource for the students. This week's math game is called Round and Round. It focuses on rounding to the nearest tens place. Please be sure that your child plays the new math game and returns the math game folder on Friday.
6th Grade Math
Due to the half day we will have no class on Tuesday. The concepts review Jeopardy game last Monday went very well and the student had a lot of fun. We will be welcoming our 6th graders back from Catalina and diving right back into the regular routine. This week we will be working on adding and subtracting decimals.
5th Grade Wilson Reading
The scholars did great with post testing step 4. I am so impressed with how much they remembered from last year. We moved on to step 5.1. This syllable type introduces the open syllable. This is when a syllable ends in a vowel. That vowel is long, such as in the first syllable in hydrate. We will move on to substep 5.2 this week, which is reading and spelling words with open syllables and the other syllable types. On Tuesday, the students will work on their presentations about The Little Free Library.
5th and 6th Grade Reading
On Monday and Wednesday we will do Read Naturally. On Tuesday, the students will be working on their Little Free Library presentation. On Thursday we will read a story from Six Way Paragraphs called "A Tasty Weed." It is about dandelions. We will focus on the vocabulary and the questions. For homework they are to read the story and answer the questions. On Friday they will discuss the story and their answers in a group. They need to be prepared to support their answers from the story.
6th Grade Reading
The students have not been filling out their reading log. This is a requirement for this class. Not only does it effect their grade when they don't complete the work, but they are also going to start receive missing assignments. Please ensure that your child is completing his/her reading log and returning it every Friday. Due to the half day we will have no class on Tuesday. On Monday and Wednesday we will do Read Naturally. On Thursday we will read a story from Six Way Paragraphs called "Collectable Cars." We will focus on the vocabulary and the questions. For homework they are to read the story and answer the questions. On Friday they will discuss the story and their answers in a group. They need to be prepared to support their answers from the story.
4th Grade Reading
Due to the half day we will have no class on Tuesday. On Monday and Wednesday we will do Read Naturally. The students are really enjoying using the web based Read Naturally. On Thursday we will read a story from Six Way Paragraphs called "A Tasty Weed." It is about dandelions. We will focus on the vocabulary and the questions. 1st Grade Reading
Due to the half day we will have no class on Tuesday. This week we will continue to review letters and sounds. Starting on Thursday we will be working on using tapping for reading and spelling three letter words. We are also charting each scholar's fluency daily. Be sure to be working on the assigned probe each week. This week's probe is 5.
6th Grade Writing
On Monday we will take a pretest for Four Level Grammar. This is a program that is being used throughout the school to immerse children in grammar. I have used this program for years and it is very effective and carries over to reading. We will spend 5-10 minutes a day on grammar. This week we will focus on writing about the Catalina trip and for those students that did not attend the trip, they will be writing about the activities that they did at school last week.
