VMHS Dance Team Style Guide
2022-2023
This style guide was created to help you with your game day/performance prep. We are a diverse program. We've tried to include a tutorial for most hair types/skin tones. We'll update the videos from time to time as we come across things that may help you.
You will wear a FULL performance face for performances, games, pep rallies, contests, and appearances unless told otherwise.
HAIR REMINDERS
- Natural hair colors only - save the adventures for summer :)
- You are NOT required to get weaves, extensions, etc. for any of our hairstyles. That is a personal choice that's left up to you. Your natural hair is fine for us.
- Hair length should be above YOUR waist line unless it's your natural hair length. If it's touching/past the top of your pants, it's too long.
- You need to be able to make the "Fave Five" at all times. Meaning do not get your hair done in a style that you aren't able to manipulate. We get last minute appearance and performance requests from time to time and the full team needs to be ready to go at all times with no excuses.
- Yes, you can get braids, you just need to be able to make all 5 team hairstyles throughout the season. Please be reasonable with the size.

High buns start with a high ponytail.
Low buns start with a low ponytail.
Buns look the same either way.

- Secure your bun to your head with bobby pins
- If you have short hair that cannot make a full bun, get as close to the shape as you can
- No hair should be in your face
- All hair smoothed down and pulled into the ponytail

Performance Makeup
FOUNDATION
- It is not required to wear foundation, but if you choose to wear it, it should look natural. A CC cream is a lighter weight/coverage alternative foundation option.
- Make sure you practice - you don't want to end up with "cake face"
- It's a good idea to wear make up to practice or while practicing at home...maybe while working out...to see how well it holds up. You don't want to do your first try to be on a game/performance day and have make up mishaps.
- MAKE SURE YOU SHADE MATCH - meaning your foundation should match your skintone...when you apply it, there should not be a difference in the shade of your neck/ears and your face
- Dewy foundations will look more "sweaty" when you sweat during a game/performance. This is not recommended for performance use.
- Use powder to "set" your foundation. This helps control oil and makes your foundation last longer....again, you have to shade match. Your face and neck should be the SAME color.
- It is a good idea to apply primer...this helps your foundation to stick to your face
EYE MAKE UP
- dark brown smokey eye (not black)
- use shades of tan/brown/gold (no blacks, greys or silvers)
- be sure to blend
- You may use dark brown or black eyeliner
BLUSH
- use a maroon/peach/pinky blush that matches YOUR skintone
- If you use bronzer, it goes in the hollows of your cheek right under the cheekbone
- blush goes on the cheek bone
- we should be able to see your blush from afar
- tip: start 2 fingers away from your nose....should not go to your nostrils :)
LIPSTICK
- You need a true red lipstick - matte is preferred
- Lip gloss and colored chapstick are not lipstick
- Find the shade that matches your skin tone best
- Suggestion: NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream. You can find it at Target, Walmart, Ulta, the NYX Store in the mall, online, etc. This is a great long lasting lipstick.
Lashes and Brows
LASHES & BROWS
LASHES
- When using mascara, you need to use a WATERPROOF MASCARA
- False lashes are used to help your eyes be seen from a distance. False lashes are only required for competition and spring show performances.
- The type of lash you use is up to you
- Please do not wear excessively long lashes that surpass your brows or create a large shadow over your eyes. Excessively dramatic lashes are not always appropriate for performances.
- When applied, the ends of your lashes should be going up, not out towards the mirror
- If it is hard to see when you put on your lashes, they may have been applied incorrectly
- Tip: whispy style lashes tend to look more natural while still giving volume
- Tip: after applying lashes, apply mascara as usual to make them look more natural
BROWS
- It is not a requirement to have your eyebrows "filled in" or professionally groomed
- If you choose to fill in your eyebrows for a performance, please do so to an extent that it still looks natural. Your brows should not look like they've been painted on.
- Tip: Use a dark shade of BROWN eyeshadow to fill in your eyebrows to keep it looking natural
- You do NOT need to pile on a lot of concealer around your brows :)

NO NO'S FOR LASHES
- Lashes should not stick straight out forward when you are looking forward or you find yourself having to lift your head back to see things in front of you or If your lashes are creating a shade/hat brim like look over your eyes - you've applied them incorrectly.
- Lashes should not be longer than the length of your natural eye
- If your lashes are so long that they go above your eye brows, they are too long
- DO NOT USE BONDING GLUE - It's not meant for your eyes. Hair glue is for just that...HAIR. Please use lash glue instead. I would hate for you to end up with swollen eyes or ripped skin.
