Staffing Challenges Continue in Music and Band
Hi Everyone,
I was hoping that we might have a Music/Band teacher in the new year, but it seems that this person has changed their mind and will not be joining our staff. This situation is frustrating for everyone and we're hoping that recent UBC and SFU graduating classes might produce some music specialists that are interested in working in Surrey. I hope to have some good news soon, but I was also thinking that in September:(((
SFU School Associates
If you are interested in taking on a student teacher in the new year, SFU is looking for some placements, but I'm not sure what grades they are specifically looking for. Deanna and Diana expressed interest last year, so let me know if you are also interested as the University may be looking for up to six placements.

Student Teacher’s Requirements for Practice Teaching during 401/402 School and Community Experience and Classroom Experiences:
School and Community Experience Week 1— Student teacher (ST) is observing the culture of the school
• This phase is intended to enable STs to spend the majority of their time observing and learning about the daily operation of schools beyond the general classroom.
• STs will explore a variety of support systems within schools (e.g., resource, EAL, Aboriginal Education, library, etc.) through contact with paraprofessionals (e.g., SEAs, Child & Youth Workers), non-enrolling teachers, support staff, and administrators, as well as learn about the importance of participation in, and service to, the school community.
• STs will spend some time observing their SA’s classroom(s) and those of other teachers in the school if possible. STs are not teaching during this time.
Classroom Experience Week 2—
Gradual release of responsibility to the student teacher
• Initially ST takes on some classroom routines.
• Towards middle or end of the first week (dependent on ST and SA agreement), ST will begin teaching approximately 60-90 min per day (can be part of a lesson, can be ST planned or SA planned lesson or co-teaching opportunities).
• Continue to observe in other classrooms.
Classroom Experience Weeks 3 and 4
• ST continues to teach 60-90 min per day, which now may include their mini unit lessons.
• SA can provide co-teaching opportunities.
• ST continues to observe other classes. Teaching Requirements: •
• Elementary requirements – teach two half-days leading to two full, consecutive days, including a mini-unit of 3 to 5 sequential lessons in a particular subject or as part of a themed unit.
• • Secondary requirements – where possible*, teach the equivalent of two half-days leading to two full, consecutive days, including a mini-unit of 3 to 5 lessons in the ST’s approved subject area (if the ST has two teaching areas, the mini-unit only needs to be in one area). *to be determined by SA and FA
