Black History Month Closing Assembly: Lift Every Voice!
Western's closing assembly for Black History Month was this past Friday, and what an afternoon to remember! The children and teachers were in for quite a treat. Western parent Mr. Almond volunteered his time to create the video that you see embedded above--capturing the essence of our Black History Month theme, "Lift Every Voice."
Mr. Almond and the Black History Month Committee wanted to share with our school community how our children use their voices to create positive change in the world. This month, we have been discussing in class and sharing through morning announcements how powerful our voices can be. Whether we use our voices to stand up for what is right, to create change, to show kindness and love, or to ask those difficult questions--we want our children to embrace the power in their words in order to make our world a better place.
We cannot thank the Black History Month Committee and all of the parent volunteers for everything that you have done for Western this month! From our opening and closing assemblies, to in-class activities, tee-shirts, and this incredible video--this year's Black History Month will be cherished and remembered forever. Thank you to Mrs. Pasqua for teaching our entire building how to sing James Weldon Johnson's "Lift Every Voice and Sing." Finally, a special thank you to Mrs. Dobbins, the Black History Month Committee Chair. This was a tremendous amount of work, and we are so grateful for the opportunities provided to our students. The children love recess, and we try to send them outdoors whenever it is warm enough to do so. The movement does help everyone focus more for the afternoon, and we just want to make sure the children and dry and comfortable. Thank you!

Please Come Visit Western Avenue's Lost & Found!
Western Avenue has two areas for Lost & Found: the playground entrance in the K/1 hallway and the playground entrance at the 3/4/5 hallway. Much of the Lost & Found is organized and taken care of by our Brownie Troop and their volunteer leaders. There is an overwhelming amount of items in the current Lost & Found and it's time for a mid-year clean out!
A charity will be picking up items on Friday, March 1st. We encourage students and parents to take a peak through the Lost & Found before that date! We've spotted plenty of snow pants, coats, sweatshirts, and hats - many have been here since October! The Girl Scouts love to help out at Western Avenue, but we need your help to manage all of the items in our Lost & Found.
Last year they bagged up nearly 30 garbage bags of items at the end of the year, washed these items, and donated them to Respond Now. It would be great if there were more items returned back home to our students. Please take a moment to stop by our Lost & Found and claim your items today! Photos of our current Lost & Found Items are below. Thank you for your support!

Traffic Flow at Arrival and Dismissal
Parents, we understand that everyone is rushing to get their days started in the morning. However, we need to do a better job driving safely in the drop-off and pick-up lines. We have three staff members directing traffic at the front lot, two staff members posted at door I (primary playground), and multiple people posted at the playgrounds and blacktop area between the playgrounds. We also have one person stationed in the North parking lot. Please remember that there is a traffic flow. Students must be dropped off in the designated car lines. Please do not drop off your children on any other street or sidewalk other than the designated lines. Please do not wait in line to make sure your child walks to the door because that stops the flow for other parents behind you. And please be very mindful when you are pulling away from the car line. There should only be one priority for morning drop off and afternoon pick up--and that priority is the safety of all our kids at Western Avenue. If we all work together, we can ensure the safety of all students. Thank you!
Thank you for reading, and have a wonderful week!
