Manitou Springs High School

Mustang News - September 9th, 2022

From The Principal

It has been a wonderful 4-day week at Manitou Springs High School! We hosted our Club Fair on Tuesday during Advisory and it was incredible to see students sharing their passions and encouraging their peers to connect with our community in new ways! We have also been thrilled to see students and staff working together to access powerful learning, such as a social studies class traveling to Flying Pig Farm to pursue experiential learning as well as Spanish students introducing themselves to their classmates with short presentations in the target language.

Next week, we are looking forward to our first School Accountability Committee (SAC) meeting on Tuesday, 9/13 from 5:30-6:30 pm in the MSHS Media Center and are seeking new and returning parent/guardian volunteers: please join us! We will be meeting at the same time/location on 11/15, 1/10, 3/14, and 5/9. Our purpose will be to provide recommendations for improvement strategies, funding priorities, and our action plan. Please email me if you are interested: aconrad@mssd14.org. Go Mustangs!

From The Front Office...

Absences & Appointments

If your student is going to be absent for the day or be arriving late, please contact the front office at 719-685-2078 or email sthomson@mssd14.org to excuse the absence. If we do not receive a phone call or email, you will receive an email notification for the unexcused absence. If your student will miss several days due to illness, please provide a doctor's note.

If your student is going to miss multiple days (due to travel, etc), your student will need a pre-arranged absence form from the front office. This form needs to be signed by teachers and an administrator.

If your student is going to leave early from school, please contact the front office at 719-685-2078 or email sthomson@mssd14.org as early as possible on the day they will be leaving. This helps to ensure that your student will be ready to leave in a timely manner.

Thank you for your cooperation!

From The World Language Department...

Spanish I students were learning about Calendario y Fechas (Calendar & Dates). For the Demonstration of Learning, students created drawings that represented they’re birthday month and birthday. They needed to display their birthday dates by using the STEM sentence “Mi cumpleaños es el ___________.” (“My birthday is on _____________.”). Students took into consideration that when writing dates in Spanish, they have to write the numbers first, add the preposition “de”, and then write the month. The drawings were amazing!

A Journalism Experiment

In Introduction to Journalism, we tried the phone/smartwatch experiment. All students took out their phones and turned on their volume. As class progressed, every time they received a call, text, new email, or notification, they got up and marked it on our chart. Yes, it was distracting; but it helped them see why we ask them to put away their phones! Here are some pictures and our results for a class of 19 in 90 minutes! Pretty astounding!

MSHS Club Fair

Students had the opportunity to explore ways to get involved at the high school. From Spanish Club to Environmental Club and MORE...there was something for everyone!
