What is SEL?
Principal’s Message
The world can certainly use kindness and empathy. Luckily at Glacier Ridge, we can do just that. For those families that have been part of the GRE family for a while, you are no stranger to Choose Kind as our motto. However, we continually reinvent what and how we build kindness and empathy with students, staff, and families. Below are just a few initiatives that we are doing differently this year.
Kindness Coaches - Student leaders are planning and training students in each class (grades 2-5) to facilitate a kindness activity and talk about kindness (with the help of the teacher). The powerful part of this structure is that student leaders are designing the kindness training based on what they think about kindness and what is most important (under the guidance of Laurie Coon, Guidance Counselor).
Kindness Calendar - Each day, during announcements, we suggest a daily act of kindness. The kindness calendar suggests a simple way students can improve someone’s day through kindness or empathy. Sample actions include, smiling and saying hello, inviting someone to play and interact with them.
Kindness Messages - One of the suggestions from the kindness calendar was to write a kind note and leave it for others to see. Multiple classes took on this initiative and wrote on pumpkins to place around the building, as well as write messages in sidewalk chalk.
These are just a few things we are doing, in addition to continuing to learn proper and polite ways to interact, collaborate, and communicate. Ways families can help at home are to talk to students about when to say please and thank you.
Sincerely,
Pete Kurty, Ed. D
Principal

GRE ANNOUNCEMENTS
Cold Weather Clothing
It’s getting cold outside! GRE students LOVE going out for recess. We want them to stay safe and healthy. Please make sure your child leaves for school with outerwear appropriate for the day’s weather. Make a habit of checking the weather forecast and encouraging your child to wear a coat, hat, scarf and gloves on these colder days. Students are welcome to wear shorts while inside, but they MUST wear pants over them for recess during cold temperatures. Students must also bring out a jacket that is appropriate for the temperature.
20 degrees or below with wind chill - all recesses will be indoors
21-25 degrees with wind chill - lunch recess will be indoors, short recess will be outdoors
26 degrees with wind chill and warmer - all recesses will be outdoors
Lastly, it is a good reminder to put your child's name in their respective winter attire. A simple task of putting names in coats and on sweatshirts helps get them back to their owner.
