Parents and students,


I apologize for not sending out or posting our Weekly What's Up last week. We have been working hard in class learning about some wonderful new things. Last week, students got to explore poetry a bit by reading a poem called Interflora by Susan Hamlyn.


In this poem, the author writes about a virtual bouquet of flower that that the narrator sends through e-mail. We had a discussion in class about what is and is not appropriate to communicate through e-mail. Many students agreed that it depends on the audience/intended person the e-mail is for. Many also said that nowadays almost anything can be communicated through e-mail. We explored verbal, situational, and dramatic irony as we read this poem and students came up with examples of each.


This week, we are going to be finishing up students' original sonnets they have written in traditional Shakespearean rhyme scheme, as they will be presenting them to the class, and we are going to begin our dive into argument. We will start off by reading two selections with opposing viewpoints, Heads Up, Humans and The Automation Paradox after which students will be working in groups to develop strong arguments for the purposes of debate. They will take a selection test either on Friday or next Monday (depending on time) over these selections and participate in their first class debate!


It is going to be a busy week, but we are getting close to the end of our first unit, Gadgets and Glitches, so Unit tests will be taken at the end of next week already! We have a lot to do, but we can do it! I am sharing the poem we read last week with you below for your enjoyment. Have a wonderful week!

About this Unit:

This unit is all about technology. Students will be investigating the essential question by reading and writing on the topic and formulating their own original opinions and ideas.

Does technology improve or control our lives?



Clarified Vocabulary:
Technology means "the practical application of science" and often refers to equipment or machines

Improve means "to make better"

Control means "to have power over."
