Math Matters
We have just finished a challenging unit on multiplication! Students mastered multiplying 1 digit numbers by 4 digit numbers and 2 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers using multiple strategies. Multiplication TOTE BAGS have been going home to help students increase their speed on basic facts. Has your child signed one out this week?
The next unit of study is a quick geometry unit on lines, rays, and angles. Students will be drawing and measuring angles in degrees with PROTRACTORS.
Reading and Science
This month, reading and science will go hand and hand as we continue our exploration of rocks and minerals. Hands on activities with rock specimens will help students to gain an understanding of how rocks are classified into three main types, IGNEOUS, METAMORPHIC, and SEDIMENTARY, based on how they are formed. By the end of the unit, your child will be able to perform tests on an unknown sample and identify the rock by its hardness, luster, and physical properties. CAUTION: young geologists are in the making.
Writing to Share a Point of View
You may have noticed that your child is trying to convince you to see their side of a controversial issue by using facts and data to support their opinion! HOORAY! They are practicing their writing skills orally. For the last 2 weeks, students have been reading short articles that present two sides of an issue. After reading both sides, students have expressed their opinion in a well constructed paragraph. In the next few weeks, students will research contrasting opinions and write a complete essay, supporting their stand and rebutting the arguments of the opposition. So, watch out! You might be in for a few debates in your house (a preview of the teen years).
Valentine's Celebration
No need to buy classroom Valentine cards! All students will be writing a TWEET for each of their classmates! Ask your child to explain. Treats will be coordinated by the room mom, Amy Dunsmore. Be on the lookout for an email.
