8th Grade Science Shout-Out
The 8th grade science students have recently completed their study of severe weather. In addition to ongoing lab work, they took part in a design challenge focused on levee design and construction. To finish our Weather and Climate Systems Unit, the students have explored climate and climate change. We plan to review the week after Thanksgiving break and quiz over climate and climate change at the end of the first week of December.
During the second week of December we will move into Physics (Energy, Forces and Motion). This will be our second major unit of study in eighth grade science. Have a conversation with your student. If their science notebook is getting full, the new unit may be a good time to acquire and start a new notebook. However, the students should hold on to their past notebooks because they can use them on the semester exam.
We hope your students are enjoying science class and we hope that everyone has time to relax and enjoy family and friends over Winter Break.
Remember that students are able to access course information in google classroom and on the 8th grade science website: http://www.tinyurl.com/science8chums
We encourage you to check it out, bookmark it or make it a favorite!
Thank you for all you do to support your student’s learning at home,
Ms. Pletz, Ms. Perkins, Mrs. Kademan, and Mrs. Harmon

Math Corner
Assessment in a CPM classroom is happening continuously. The teacher assesses student understanding as they circulate the classroom while teams are working. The kind of assessment a teacher is doing in these situations is called Formative Assessment. By listening and watching carefully and asking questions, the teacher is able to determine at what level the students are understanding the material. She will know when to bring the class together to clarify a misunderstanding that may be occurring in more than one team. Or, she may see that one team can be pushed to try a deeper challenge while another needs to back up and revisit an earlier part of the problem with some help. This kind of assessment will help a teacher know what students know and what they don’t know.
Math Strategy for students: Use Appropriate Tools Strategically - Determining when to use a calculator, draw a sketch, or use technology is important in mathematics. Think about your prior work to figure out which tool to use. A tool should help you strengthen your understanding, not just give an answer.Hour of Code - December 13

Future Quest 2019
On November 21, 2019, over 5,000 middle school students, including over 600 students from Cardinal Heights Upper Middle School, participated in FutureQuest 2019 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. FutureQuest provided students with an opportunity to relate their current interests to future education and career opportunities found within 16 career clusters and helped prepare students to choose high school classes that relate to their interests and strengths.
“I really liked seeing all the different businesses up-close” said one 8th grade student.
Over 90 partners in education had booths set up at FutureQuest. Exhibitors included: American Family Insurance, American Transmission Company, Charter Spectrum, Cummins Filtration, Dane County Credit Union, EVCO plastics, Ford Motors, Hooper Corporation, J.H. Findorff & Son Inc., Journey Mental Health, Michels Corporation, NARI Madison, Nonn’s Flooring, QBE, Royle Printing, SSM Health, Stevens Construction, Stoughton Trailers, Tim O’Brien Homes, Unity Point Health - Meriter, Wis DNR, WIS DOT, WI Farm Bureau Federation, WICPA, Widen Enterprises, and Zimbrick Inc.
During the event, students navigated through five career cluster zones. Each student visited at least twelve booths, where they asked questions and took notes about what they learned from the exhibitors, as well as participated in a hands-on activity.
Students walked away from FutureQuest with a broader lens through which to view the importance of skill development obtained through both secondary and postsecondary coursework.
