Second Semester Selections Due

Reading Community City School District will be continuing in a blended learning model for the second semester, with the addition of in-person instruction on Wednesdays. Families also have the option of their students learning remotely. A survey must be completed for each student by December 8 to select in-person or remote learning. The survey can be found here. Please complete it promptly so planning can begin.

Winter Athletics on Pause

Athletics and extracurriculars are an important part of the educational experience to keep our students connected and involved in school, but due to the increase in COVID-19 in our region, RCCSD is suspending in-person meetings for winter athletics until January 4th and will reassess the ability to safely resume at that time. Due to close contact without masks during athletic activities, there is a greater risk for our student-athletes and coaches. Individual training can continue, and coaches are able to meet virtually with students, but in-person activities are on pause. Extra-curricular activities can meet in-person following all distancing and masking guidelines or virtually.

Inclement Weather Plan

With our current learning model, there will only be two options on days when there is inclement weather: either students will report to school as normal, or we will switch to remote learning for that day. There will be no 2-hour delay.

On remote learning days, Reading High School and Reading Middle School students will attend their classes remotely following that day’s normal schedule. Reading Elementary students will follow the remote learning schedule they normally follow on Wednesdays.

The decision will be made by 5:30 am and communicated out to families as quickly as possible. You can expect notifications via School Messenger, on the district website, on our district social media accounts, and through local television and radio outlets.

Canned Food Drive Bigger Than Ever

One of our great Blue Devil traditions continues this month - the Canned Food Drive! For the first time, all three of our buildings will be participating to give others a happier holiday season. Students are asked to bring in canned goods, boxed food, or food items in plastic containers - no glass containers! All proceeds go to the St. John’s Food Pantry, helping out families in need in our Reading community. Last year more than 1,500 items were donated.

The food drive runs from December 7-16 and students will have an opportunity to win prizes for their donations.

Reading Elementary and Middle School PTO are hosting family dinner nights at Domino’s Pizza. The next takes place on December 8 and continues every second Tuesday of the month throughout the school year. Holiday Cheer on Display

“Santa, I know him!” - Buddy the Elf

Buddy would feel at home in the Reading Cafetorium because the window to the Media Center has been turned into a holiday display right out of the movie Elf. Students were welcomed back for in-person learning after Thanksgiving break with a winter wonderland. Mr. Mark Griffen, Middle School teacher, dedicated his own time to recreate the Gimbels Department Store display from the movie. He also created a scavenger hunt for students. Thank you to Mr. Griffen for creating some seasonal fun for our Blue Devil students.

RMS Staff Takes on No-Shave November

10 members of the Reading Middle School staff took part in No-Shave November this year. The mission of the yearly event is to raise money for cancer research, treatment, and education. Money saved on grooming products is donated during the effort. Money raised this year will go to help St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Great Oaks Offering “Coffee Chats” for Parents

Great Oaks is hosting “Coffee Chats” for the parents of prospective students several times in January. This gives parents an opportunity to learn more about the educational and career options available for their students. Three virtual events will be held for the parents of 6-10th graders on January 12 and 14. Find out more and RSVP here.

RHS Counselor Corner

Sophomore students will participate in a presentation by The Great Oaks Schools this week in the US History class. All students will receive a catalog describing the programs offered at The Great Oaks campuses. More information will follow on signing up for virtual tours to help students and parents explore programs they may be interested in. Vocational career options are one of the career paths students are encouraged to explore. For more information, look for the catalogs coming home on Thursday and Friday.

  • Interims will be accessible in Progress Book on Friday, 12/4.
  • Fall End of Course testing will be Wednesday, 12/9, and Wednesday, 12/16. Students will be notified if they need to test.
  • Our Reading Schools Thank-full Food Drive will be from Monday, December 7 - Wednesday, December 16. Donate items to support St. John's UCC Food Pantry.
  • Winter Break is Saturday, December 19- Sunday, January 3. We look forward to seeing you back at RHS Monday, January 4th, 2021!
  • Semester 1 ends Friday, January 15, 2021 and report cards will be mailed home on Friday, January 22.
  • Scheduling for the 2021-2022 school year will begin in January with presentations to the current 8th-grade students on Monday, January 25, and Tuesday, January 26. Teachers will meet with their current 8th-grade students to make recommendations for their classes for Freshman year on Thursday, January 28, and Friday, January 29.
  • Scheduling for current high school students will begin in February.
  • AP test deposit of $50 is due by Wed, February 2. Money should be brought to Mrs. Bell in Guidance.
