VOGELTOWN SCHOOL - THE 'VS' WAY
Care for the land, Care for the people, Go Forward
Our Values: I.R.O.C.K
Inclusive, Respectful, Original, Courageous, Kind
Whakauru, Whakaute, Tipu, Kaha, Atawhai
SCHOOL VALUE THIS TERM: 'TO SHOW KINDNESS"
These are for our Vogeltown learners to be:
Inclusive (Whakaru), Respectful (Whakaute), Original (Tipu), Courageous (Kaha) and Kind (Atawhai).
These values were chosen by the staff, learners and community of Vogeltown School in 2019.
This term we are focusing on being 'Kind'.
To be kind and welcoming to all our new Vogeltown learners is the 'Vogeltown Way'. We show kindness as this is part of our school vision of Manaaki Tangata - Caring for the people.
Being a 'Vogeltowner' is being a good citizen of our community - someone who is kind and caring!
SCHOOL GOAL: 'SHOWING KINDNESS - MANAAKITANGA'
WHAT: Kindness or Manaakitanga, is showing care and concern for other people, animals and the environment – ‘caring for the people’. It is part of our school vision and one of our values.
Kindness is especially important at the start of the year. We are all a bit nervous about the new year, our new class, our new teacher and making new friends, so we show kindness.
WHY: We need kindness for people to ‘get on’ and relate to each other, animals and the environment. “Manāki Tangata, Manāki whenua - To care for the people and to care for the land” this is a big part of our school vision.
HOW: By welcoming new people to our school – making new friends
By making feel welcome to your class or our school
By taking notice if things need your care
By treating other people the way you would like to be treated
SIGNS OF SUCCESS:
You practise environmentally friendly habits such as recycling
You take excellent care of your friends, new people
You accept that people are different
You have respect for the feelings and well being of others
TE REO FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
KIA ORA VS WHANAU, FROM MR O
It has been an amazing first week of the school year with happy faces everywhere! It is so good to have our Vogeltown family back together and we have welcomed 20 new learners and their families to Vogeltown as well this week. As Captain William Hobson said at the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi - "He iwi tahi tatou' -- We are now one people.
Term 1 is shaping up to be a very busy term full of great activities! We will keep you all in the loop with communication of the activities over the term through our normal portals. We use our Facebook page (go and like us), Skool loop app (free download) our school calendar (see link below) and our newsletter. We are also using 'Seesaw' in the classrooms this year. This is an amazing tool for the teachers and links to individual classes. Last year, this was invaluable when we went into lockdown, so please scan the QR code your child(ren) are bringing home and download this app.
A massive thanks to everyone who has returned the communication sheet we sent out this week. We rely on this to update our school systems and hopefully you will have read all the ways we try to communicate with our families.
Our teams are beginning the year with units of work around getting to know their class, themselves and their teachers - making connections. We will then move to units of work about our link with the Huatoki river, early New Plymouth and their class bird. The Paetoki (senior) team will be doing lots of post camp work and bonding at camp!

WELCOME TO VOGELTOWN
Koko has a lovely nature and has just 'passed' her puppy training class. We will be treating Koko as a 'therapy dog' for our learners at Vogeltown School.
A therapy dog is trained to provide affection, comfort, support and love for children and adults with a physical or emotional disability.
Koko will start slowly and then build in to full days at Vogeltown.
START OF YEAR INFO
Sunhats
Please ensure your child has a bucket hat for use each day at school. These hats need to be named. Vogeltown School hats can be purchased at the office for $17. Your child will also need suitable sun protection, applied before coming to school. We do have some sunscreen in the each classroom - however this is not suitable for sensitive skin.
School Stationery
It is very important that students have the correct stationery to start the term. If purchasing stationery this week from OfficeMax use the list sent home at the end of last year. Online orders are still open and will be delivered within 9 - 10 working days.
Please phone the school office if you require another copy of your child's stationery list or for further information regarding stationery requirements.
Attendance
All students and parents should strive for 100% attendance. School is a busy, active environment and non-attendance simply means that students fall behind with their learning and this can adversely affect friendships and limit opportunities. Please phone 753 6843 or text (021753680), email office@vogeltown.school.nz or use 'Skool Loop' to notify us of a student absence.
Leaving the School Grounds
Children may not leave the grounds without written permission from a parent or caregiver. Parents collecting or returning children in school time are asked to visit the office and sign children in and out on the ipads at the office. You will receive a printed our slip that needs to go to your childs' teacher so they know they have been signed out at the office.
VOGELTOWN HOME AND SCHOOL
We are aware that so many of our families are busy, so we try to make roles within this group 'low key' and we do any fundraising activities that will take a lot of your time.
Last year the Home and School raised over $16,000 and this was an amazing effort. We would love to see some new faces at our Home and School committee - we are keen to get the year going with our first event the School Whanau Fiesta (picnic).
We have a meeting this coming Tuesday night at 7pm in the senior school staffroom - PLEASE feel free to come along, have a cuppa, have a chat, have a good laugh and see if you can help this group out and in the turn the school in anyway.
VOGELTOWN SCHOOL FEES/DONATION
We can, however, still ask for a contribution towards overnight camps. See the information below about the Paetoki camp coming up in a couple of weeks.
More information can be found on the Ministry of Education's website.
Mr O
COVID-19
Over 2021, we will continue to follow guidance from the Ministries of Health & Education. Current protocols are around good hygiene and everyone consciously using the Covid Tracer App / QR codes at entrance points to the school please.
HUATOKI STREET UPGRADE
There is still some small work to be completed and then a safety audit by the New Plymouth District Council. There is a bike lane to be put back in to keep our cyclists safe and a little bit of work with the pedestrian crossing and our stop signs.
Thanks to everyone this week parking in the designated parks and not our neighbours driveways, we appreciate your support with this. It has also been great to see so many of our senior school kids walking, biking and scootering to school by themselves - Ka mau te wehi!
We will be having an official opening of the shared pathway in front of both schools at some stage this term.

For parents of this year's Year 5 and 6 students
Year 5 and 6 Camp is being held on the 24th, 25th and 26th of FEBRUARY this term at Vertical Horizons - we are really looking forward to it!
A big thanks to all those parents who put their names forward to help out and got their vetting forms in. We have enough parent helpers for camp now.
There is a camp meeting next week on Wednesday 10th February at 5.30pm in the school hall for all parents/caregivers. The meeting will only be 30 minutes at the most. We are asking all our parent helpers for camp to stay after this meeting for a quick catch up.
