Academic Update

I love how the weeks are getting better and better! We are really working hard and diving into so much or our curriculum. Reading groups are going well, literacy contracts are being accomplished and comprehension/assessments are improving daily. I love to see how everything comes together with hard work and learning. I am thrilled to say we are doing some "digital" writing using Google Classroom. We wrote about "Hurricane Matthew" this week. Once I learn a little more about this resource, we will share it with you so that you can see what your child is doing digitally. How exciting!

Students continued to work on our literary skills for character, setting, problem, solution and character traits. Students did well mastering the parts of the friendly letter. (heading, greeting, body, closing, and signature) We actually wrote our letter to the names of family and friends you provided. We have a few "final" editing marks to correct and then we will be ready to mail them next week.

In math we reviewed strategies for adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers without regrouping. We used manipulatives to help us grasp the concepts better. We also worked on finding the "unknown" answer to an addition or subtraction problem. We are using a "box" to identify the unknown number. We will be looking at finding the "beginning unknown" number as we compare problems.

We learned about one of our greatest explorers of all time, Christopher Columbus. He sailed on one of his 3 ships, the Santa Maria. The other ships were the Nina and the Pinta. We continued talking about community workers as we prepare for our Community Walk. We even shared at a few community projects.

PINK OUT! RRES 2nd Graders are turning it PINK for a Cure for Cancer on Wednesday, October 19th!

Come to school decked out in PINK to show our hope in finding a cure for cancer! Second graders will wear pink on Wednesday, but the rest of the school will show their support on Friday. (We will be on our Community Walk, so we are showing our pride earlier.) All donations will be given to the RRES Relay for Life Team for our contribution. The community hosts a huge Relay for Life Event in May at the high school.
