My Career as a...... Welder

Job description:

Basically take too pieces of metal, and join (or melt) them together using heat, to create a strong, structural bond.

Median Salary:

An entry level welder makes around $36,473.

Job Outlook:

Expected to grow 6% from 2012 to 2022

  • Maintenance/ Operations
  • Telecommunications
  • Power, Structural, and Technical Systems

Welders work up to 70 hours a week and overtime is usual

Work Environment:

It is a hard working and sometimes dangerous environment, it requires strength and know-how in difficult situations, you have to use problem solving skills regularly to get the job done.

How do I get there?

I would like to go to Arkansas University in Fayetteville.

It isn't out of state so it would be cheaper, also it is close enough to home. I also choose this school because of their great athletic programs.

What Degrees?

I would like to get an engineering degree, it would help somewhat in my welding career and it would give me something to fall back on as other careers need engineers (construction, mechanics, etc). I think it would be a good career.

Tuition would cost around $23,506 for an undergraduate with a dorm off campus as I am planning to do.

I am hoping for an athletic scholarship in football, or possibly an academic scholarship
