Forensic Science Update
March 19, 2014
What have we been learning?
Sizzurp: Dangerous Party Drug
Have you heard about "Sizzurp"? Also known as "Purple Drank" or "Lean", it has been popularized by various musical artists such as Lil' Wayne, Three 6 Mafia and Far East Movement. It can cause seizures, heart problems, breathing problems, motor skill impairment or even death. It contains large amounts of prescription cough syrup, soda and candy to flavor the drink. We have been learning how dangerous even prescription drugs can be when not used properly and as intended!
Soil Analysis
We have been studying the various horizons of soil as well as soil evidence. We learned that soil evidence can be more than just dirt, it can be pieces of glass, rocks, brick pieces and even broken concrete! Soil evidence is class evidence because it can't be traced back to an individual, but it can be used to narrow down a list of suspects!
Toxicology and Alcohol
We learned that Alcohol is a drug and that it is a depressant. We learned that a breathalyzer detects and analyzes the alcohol on your breath as you exhale because alcohol is excreted at a rate of 2100 to 1 in alveolar breath. What an intoxicated breathes into the breathalyzer is a direct reflection of the amount of alcohol in the pulmonary artery.
Class updates!
Grades have been updated and progress reports have been released!
We had quite a few more zeroes than usual this week, so make sure that you double check the gradebook to ensure that you have turned in all assignments! Let me know if you have any questions!
