Trees
Objectives of the week: - Compares and measures - Demonstrates emergent writing skills - Demonstrates knowledge of the alphabet - Uses number concepts and operations - Uses language to express thoughts and need
Dear families,
Our class is beginning to study trees. We’ll be observing and comparing trees to learn about what lives in them, what they’re made from and who cares for them. We hope that this study will help children explore and appreciate nature. As we study trees, we will use literacy, math, the arts and technology to explore the topic in depth. We will learn important social studies and scientific concepts through firsthand investigations.
If you are able to take a “tree walk” with your child, we would appreciate your help in collecting tree parts to investigate. If you can, please take a bag to a tree area and collect things that have fallen; such as leaves, bark, acorns, twigs, flowers, fruit or cones. See below for suggestions of other tree parts to bring in.
a variety of leaves evergreen springs or small boughs
small limbs, branches, twigs a live, potted tree
food from trees flower clippings (may be kept in water)
pinecones seeds
bark tree “cookies” (cross sections of trees that show the rings)
We need your help to enrich the children’s learning. If you work with trees, please let us know. Perhaps you’re a gardener, forester, tree trimmer, tree farmer or nursery worker. Even if your job is unrelated to trees, you can be involved in our study. Extra hands always help!
What you can do at home
You can help your child explore and appreciate nature by learning about trees. Invite your child to talk about trees. Share stories about your favorite childhood memories involving trees and games you might have played around them. Wonder aloud with your child to encourage his or her thinking about trees.
At home, collect parts of trees, and encourage your child to sort them. Your child might also enjoy making a collage by arranging and gluing tree items on paper.
Thank you for playing and important role in our learning!
Next week, we will learn about their characteristics and how they are different depending on where they are; paying close attention to the ones in our community, as we also celebrate Bringing Literature to Life!
Gracias por esta sorpresa tan linda! Les mando un fuerte abrazo- Mrs. Amelia
Thank you to our mystery readers! We can't wait to solve more mysteries.

Dear Parents,
On behalf of the Global Issues exploratory class, along with our teacher Ms. Broeckel, we wanted to let you know that we are doing a Book Drive in Honduras for kids in a village. A non-profit organization, Educate, helps children who unfortunately are unable to access resources to receive education. Members from the organization went to a village in Honduras and asked the community what they wanted. A library was their response. Therefore, ISP and Educate have partnered to make this dream a reality. This is truly a whole-school service project. Your kids may have talked about a superhero coming to school. Three of my peers went to classes to advertise the project on Monday. The idea is for all the families to donate books so we can reach our goal of 350 books for the village. The collection of books starts Monday, March 5th and will end Friday, March 16th. Books should be in Spanish for kids from ages 3-15, and in good condition. Boxes have been already placed in PK classes for your children to take them and place them there. If you have any questions, please send an e-mail to Ms. Broeckel, our teacher of Service-Learning/Global Issues at: abroeckel@isp.edu.pa
Kind regards,
Celeste Jaramillo
