A Publication of St. Gabriel the Archangel School 9/7/2022
Dear Fabulous Families -
It was good to see everyone last week at Back to School Night/ Curriculum Night. For those that were unable to attend, here are some brief highlights:
- Auction Theme: Nautical Nights
- Auction planning meeting- September 28th 6-7pm in the Cafeteria - Come and volunteer!
- Safety videos were shown prior to Curriculum night beginning. There are a few parent videos on the Archdiocese website (https://www.archstl.org/education/parent-videos
- Safety is not just a concern at school. Parents were encouraged to have safety conversations using the above Archdiocesan videos as a guide to talk with their children about safety at home. Do children know what to do in case of a tornado, fire, or earthquake while at home? Is this something that is reviewed with your child's babysitter?
- Please practice with your children to insure they know your contact information. We are finding that students do not know their parents' phone numbers if they need to call home.
- Don't forget Spirit Wear sales end on Sunday, September 11th.
As mentioned in last week's newsletter, we had received guidance from the STL DoH regarding schools and COVID-19. We have created the following plan to guide our response this year: SGA 2022-2023 COVID-19 Mitigation Plan .
Peace and Joy -

Notes from Monsignor
It has now been twenty-one years since our nation experienced an unprecedented act of terrorism. The children in our school were not even alive on that day. The loss of life was great, but in the midst of such terror, great acts of bravery and selflessness were exhibited. 9/11 is a day that will be etched in our memories. "How is it possible to commit acts of such savage cruelty?" "The human heart has depths from which schemes of unheard-of ferocity sometimes emerge, capable of destroying in a moment the normal daily life of a people," Pope John Paul II said.
"But faith comes to our aid at these times when words seem to fail," he stressed. "Christ’s word is the only one that gives a response to the questions which trouble our spirit." He continued, "Even if the forces of darkness appear to prevail, those who believe in God know that evil and death do not have the final say. Christian hope is based on this truth; at this time our prayerful trust draws strength from it."
As we gather here over twenty years later, let us remember and pray for those who lost their lives in this senseless attack and let us always pray to find the way of peace, to break the unbridled logic of the one who wants to destroy life. The senseless taking of innocent lives has seared all our hearts. We pray for continued healing and for the strength to serve and encourage one another in hope and faith. Our masses this day will be in remembrance of those who died on 9/11 and their families.
Let us also pray for all victims of violence and their families, both in our city and nation, who are so affected by these senseless violent acts.
Msgr. John Shamleffer
P.S. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the process through which adults enter into the Catholic faith. RCIA is a spiritual journey of faith. To learn more about this journey there will be an introductory meeting on this Sunday September 11 at 10 AM in the Fireplace Room. If you know someone who might be interested in joining the Church, be that family member, fellow worker, or neighbor; please invite them to this gathering. Our parishioners are always the best evangelists. Your faith and how you live it speaks volumes to those around you.
