One thing makes a HUGE difference ...
If you could do one thing to ensure your child's success, it would be to make sure they read every day! Research is clear on this one....K-2 students should be reading for at least 20 minutes, while 3-5 students should read at least 30 minutes. At WSES, we limit homework to make sure there is time for every child to read... please don't underestimate the power of how it grows your child's ability to decode, grow vocabulary, and increases fluency and comprehension. If they aren't reading, they are likely to develop reading skills more slowly and fall behind. Tips to help:
- Read with your child (switching off pages for young children and reading the same novel for older children so you can talk about it... builds relationships, too!)
- Have them read aloud so you can hear how fluently they read (will help you know if the book is a good fit, too.)
- Talk about movies or tv shows and have them retell them - talking about it allows for improved comprehension and lets them practice correct sequencing
