ETSC Professional Development
What is OER (Open Education Resource) ?
Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching and learning materials (such as textbooks) that exist in the public domain or have been released under an open license. This means that those resources can be used free of charge and distributed widely. Why are they important?
• OER are free.
• OER are often more up-to-date than textbooks.
• In most cases, OER can be updated and modified without asking the content creator for permission.
• OER exist in digital format and can be downloaded onto e-readers and other technology devices.

OER in K-12: Sharing, Common Core and Future Directions
The Internet, open licensing, cloud computing and open educational resources (OER) provide the foundation for a world in which a quality education can be a basic human right, and Washington Schools can have updated, high quality, affordable, common core aligned curriculum and textbooks for the marginal cost of $0. Dr. Cable Green, Director of Global Learning at Creative Commons, will discuss the current state of OER, what is happening in K-12, the opportunity for an "open common core," and how governments are adjusting their policies and funding requirements to ensure publicly funded resources are openly licensed resources.REGISTER TODAY at www.myesd.org.
