Picking Up Student Belongings / Returning Checked Out Items
On Friday, May 15th, we will implement a curbside process for families to pick-up items left at school and drop-off items that must be returned as outlined below. Students and parents/guardians will not be permitted inside the VCS buildings during this time.
Families will remain in their vehicles, and will be directed to go to the designated area for the youngest or only VCS student in your family. (For example, if you have a 1st grader, a 4th grader, and a 10th grader, you'll pick up items for all of your children in the 1st grade area.)
Times are as follows:
K-5 (youngest and only): Friday, May 15, 2020 from 8:00 am-2:00 pm
6-12 (youngest and only): Monday, May 18, 2020 from 8:00 am-2:00 pm
Examples of Personal Items to Pick-Up
Desk/Locker Contents
Musical Instruments
Student Medications
Examples of Items to Return/Drop-Off
(Please label each item with your child’s name and grade level.)
Textbooks
Classroom Library Books
Musical Instruments
Uniforms (i.e. athletics)
Because students may still need to use the technology devices loaned to families by VCS, we will collect them on Friday, May 22, 2020 from 8:00 am-2:00 pm.
All items not picked up will be donated, recycled, or thrown away.
FREE before and after school care in FALL 2020
At VCS, we are aware of the challenges many families face when trying to get their children to school and make it to work on time. We have a solution for you! As early as 6:30 am, we will provide a safe place for students to come to school early to read, study, or work on other tasks. Additionally, from 3:15 pm-6:00 pm, students are welcome to stay after school to work on homework, have some outside time, or play games.
These services are FREE for our K-8 students. Yes...you read that right...FREE!
Regular instructional time will begin at 7:50 am, and will end at 3:15 pm for K-8 (West), K-6 (East), and 3:24 pm for 7-12 (East).
Enrolling for the 2020-2021 school year
7-12 Course Registration
Freshman (9th Grade) Fall Course Registration
Even though we are all social distancing and taking care in this unprecedented time, your school leaders and teachers are already preparing for school in the Fall. An important part of that preparation is your course registration.
A few weeks ago the 8th grade students from West came to visit the East campus. Just as a reminder from that day, attending VCS East ensures that you will continue to receive a high quality education that includes lots of activities/clubs, a new athletic program, Advanced Placement courses, and Concurrent Enrollment through Aurora Community College and Pickens Tech.
Historically, students that have graduated from VCS have scored much higher on their SAT test as a result of our high quality high school program, and smaller class sizes. Starting in May 2021 the state of Colorado will require that all graduating seniors meet minimum standards. The options to meet those standards are attached below. Each and every student graduating in the state of Colorado must meet the requirements in both English and Math and if they do not, they will not graduate. They will have to spend extra time in high school until they can complete the minimum standards. Choosing a high school program with excellent academic and activities programs will help you achieve, grow and graduate on time.
Below is a link to the form to register for your freshman electives. These will be in addition to your core classes including, math, science, history, and language arts. Attached to this email is a pdf document with a description of the courses. Please just follow the instructions on the form so that we can begin to schedule your classes!

Remote Learning Update
May 1, 2020
Dear VCS parents and families:
Thank you so much for your patience and endurance during March and April. As we finish our 5th week of remote learning, I trust that everybody is continuing to stay safe and healthy. As always, safety is our primary concern.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank VCS parents and guardians for helping more than ever during the 4th quarter with the education of your children. This year has been like no other.
Thank you, also, to my VCS leadership team for working countless hours alongside me as we navigate this unprecedented COVID quarantine event.
I want to particularly thank VCS teachers and support staff for creating new and unique lessons, making all those phone calls, informing parents, and encouraging student motivation.
After the uncertainty of not being able to return to school after March 11th, I am so proud of the work that our VCS staff compiled with limited resources and in such a short amount of time. In fact, since March 11th, we have all pulled together as a school community and have taken great steps in making the best of the challenges we face through the COVID quarantine. Well done!
As we roll through the last three weeks of the 2019-20 school year, we’re already looking ahead to next year. As you have likely seen from recent news sources, and also advised by our own Governor Polis, we are preparing for both a “Regular” and a “Remote” start for the 2020-21 school year. Fortunately, we have a lot of experience with a regular start and that planning, which involves necessary social distancing changes, is already well underway. However, if we do ultimately face a remote start, we are excited about that challenge too, and have every confidence in our ability to roll out the most meaningful and equitable Remote Learning Program (RLP) for all 1100+ Vanguard Classical School East and West students. Unlike the conditions right after March 11th, we now have the luxury of time to research, evaluate, choose, and train VCS staff and students with the remote platform models that will serve us best for an upcoming virtual school year.
As a part of this process, we will be visiting with your VCS Board of Directors over the next week to discuss our RLP process; particularly known successes and challenges. Our focus will be on determining the highest quality remote engagement platform for all VCS students. We plan on communicating frequently with VCS families once we have the main components of our RLP chosen and in the pipeline, which we envision happening through the remainder of May and into June. And of course, we also very much look forward to a time, hopefully soon, when we can get back to normal and enjoy regular face-to-face instruction and interaction with those we love so much, our VCS students and families.
Sincerely,
Jay Cerny and the Vanguard Classical School East and West Leadership Team
