A Message from the Forest Park HS Counseling Department

The School Counseling Department continues to provide our students and families with a variety of services for success in High School and beyond. Here is a snapshot of the programs that we have been working on and some others to come in the upcoming months.

2018 Scheduling Process

Scheduling Timeline:

  • January 16th - January 26th - Teacher input course recommendations
  • January 17th - Curriculum Fair with AP Night and Elective Fair
  • January 30th - February 5th - Students/Parents/Guardians review teacher recommendations through Parent Portal online system to review/submit course selections for 2018-2019 school year
  • February 13th - Students begin visits to the School Counseling office to meet with their respective counselor to review/discuss course selections/schedule for the 2018-2019 school year
  • May 2018 - Student course request mailed home. Students/Parents/Guardians have until the last day of school year to review/submit any changes to the student course request for 2018-2019 school year

Keep in mind that the course selection process is a lengthy process which requires students, parents, and school staff to work collaboratively throughout the entire process. In May of this school year, students/parents will receive a course listing through the mail which will list the courses which the student intends to take during the 2018-2019 school year. It will be imperative that families review the information and submit any changes to the School Counseling office by/before June 8, 2018.

Curriculum Fair Night

Students and Parents are invited to attend this important and informative night. You will have an opportunity to speak with our AP teachers about Advanced Placement course content and expectations. In addition, each department will have a table set up to discuss their course offerings. And rising 9th grade students and families will receive information about high school courses, scheduling information, and information to help with the transition from middle school to high school.

Photos from College Tour to James Madison University, University of VA, and University of Mary Washington

On October 19th, 30 seniors visited the colleges of JMU, UVA, and Mary Washington along with 20 seniors from Hylton. Students were able to meet with admissions and tour the campuses. We will offer another tour this spring for juniors.

Forest Park High School Career Fair

The School Counseling Department will be having their Annual Career Fair on April 19th, 2018. Interested parents who would be willing to speak with our students about their interesting jobs and career experience, please contact Mrs. Juba for more information at: jubacm@pwcs.edu or 571-589-3437.

Freshman Conferences - Class of 2021

During the week of October 30th, the School Counseling Department met with our freshman students about Sexual Harassment in schools and discussed with them tips for high school success. Each student at the end of the presentation received a "Welcome to the Park" information packet, which contains an abundance of information about Forest Park High School and strategies on how to be successful in High School.

Junior Conferences - Class of 2019

During the week of November 13th, the School Counseling Department met with Juniors through their History classes to discuss career exploration and post-secondary planning. Juniors utilized Family Connections to complete an assessment which matched their personality with possible future career options. Graduation requirements and Possible Steps to take as they start preparing for their future were also discussed.

Sophomore Conferences - Class of 2020

During the week of November 28th, the School Counseling staff met with all 10th grade students to complete a lesson on the career component of Family Connection. We also used this time to introduce the students to resume writing and the resume tool of Family Connection. We will be meeting with all 10th graders again at the end of January to continue with the resume writing and will also review their PSAT scores. They will be receiving a paper copy of their PSAT scores at this time.

Governor's School at Innovation Park

Tenth grade students had the opportunity to attend a field trip to Governor's School at GMU in November. Applications for Governor school are now available on the county's website and are due February 1st.

Important Information regarding the PSAT

All 10th and 11th grade students who took the PSAT this past October will be receiving their score reports the week of December 11 if they provided an email on their score sheet. The School Counseling Department will be meeting with the 10th grade students in January to review their results and have students create a Collegeboard and Khan Academy account. The Khan Academy and Collegeboard have partnered together to provide students with a FREE Official Personalized SAT Preparation course. This wonderful feature, will provide students with an opportunity to practice for the SAT anytime and anywhere. Free Money $$$ to pay for College/Scholarships

Students stop by and visit our Career Center and check our the many scholarship opportunities that we have available at the moment. Remember that this FREE Money that is going to help you pay for college next school year. Scholarship Information is available on Family Connection and information will be sent out via email.

An Important Reminder to All Seniors

Seniors as you begin to receive your College Acceptance Letters, please remember to provide the School Counseling office with a copy of the acceptance letters. On the copy, please indicate whether you will be "Attending" or "Not Attending" the College/University in the upcoming fall semester.

This also applies to any Scholarship Acceptance Letters that you receive from Colleges/Universities or community organizations. Make a copy and on the copy, please indicate whether you will be "Accepting" or "Not Accepting" the Scholarship.

Continue to bring your College Acceptance letters and Scholarship Award letters as you receive them in the mail and throughout the school year until the deadline of May 10th.

This information will be used in preparation for the End of Year, Senior Recognition Program.
