Updates for the Week
Hello Wilkesboro families! We hope that you’ve enjoyed this beautiful weekend.
The last week of school is here, and we are excited for this week’s upcoming events. There’s still a lot going on, so please listen carefully.
We are so excited about tomorrow’s Field Day. We want to thank our PTO for making this end of year possible in spite of restrictions. Please make sure you dress your child for the heat and the sun. Kids will need to wear clothes and shoes that can wet and dirty, including a bathing suit, shorts, t-shirt, and water or closed toe shoes. Hats and sunglasses are okay too. Please make sure to send a towel and a change of clothes including a shirt, pants, and underwear in a plastic bag. We strongly encourage you to apply sunscreen before sending your child to school, but it is okay to send sunscreen for them to apply later in the day.
Please remember that students must have a signed permission slip in order to go down the slide (form sent home last week and attached below). Unfortunately, due to NCDHHS restrictions, parent volunteers cannot participate in Field Day. While we will miss our parent volunteers, our staff will provide good supervision.
We have some other big events on Tuesday. All students will participate in Step Up Day on Tuesday morning, and some third graders will take the Read to Achieve test after that. On Tuesday evening at 6:30, we look forward to celebrating our fifth grade class with a special promotion event in our back yard. Please see ClassDojo for full details.
Thank you for those of you who returned all technology. We are still missing close to 50 chargers, and we ask anyone impacted to return the charger or pay your technology damage fees as soon as possible. We will hold all report cards until fees are paid. Please contact Mrs. St. John with questions.
On Wednesday morning, we welcome our pre-k parents to the gym at 8:30 for awards. After one last morning of school, we will dismiss school at 12:30 for all students. Report cards will be sent home on Wednesday with additional details about summer reading programs and activities for kids.
We are proud of our students and staff and what we’ve been able to accomplish this year in spite of tremendous challenges. It is a year we will always remember, and we are so grateful to you for your encouragement, patience, and support. Thank you for a great year, and have a great evening!
Field Day Reminders
Field Day is an outdoor tradition at WES where wecelebrate the end of the year with a water slide onour hill, field fun and games, and snowcones courtesy of the PTO.
You can read all about Field Day on your child's permission slip sent home last week or on the link below. Your child must have a signed permission slip if you want your child to participate in the water slide. We cannot make any exceptions.
Important things to remember --
1. Dress for the heat. Kids will need to wear clothes that can get wet and dirty. We recommend bathing suits covered by shorts and t-shirts. Hats and sunglasses are okay too.
2. Wear shoes that can get wet or dirty. If you've got water shoes, that's great. If you don't, please send old shoes that can get wet and dirty.
3. Please send a change of clothes -- shirt, pants, underwear, and socks. Put in a bag and label with your child's name.
4. All children will need a towel.
5. Please apply sunscreen before sending your child to school. You can also send sunscreen to school foryour child to apply.
6. Remember that due to NCDHHS guidelines, we cannot have parent volunteers at Field Day.
It's going to be a fun day! Have a great weekend! We will see you on Monday.

About Attendance
Parents, please note that since we have moved to Plan A, students who are participating in Plan A will be marked PRESENT or ABSENT. If your child is not in school, you will need to send in absence notes as usual and it will be coded as excused or unexcused. If your child is officially quarantined or excluded by the health department and/or the school nurse, your teacher will offer remote learning. If your child participates and submits work each day, the student will be marked PRESENT OFF SITE (1R). If not, the quarantine absences would be excused. If your child needs to be out, we will work with you to make sure your child doesn't get behind.
For students who continue with remote learning note that in order for us to count your child in attendance off site, we must on a daily basis verify that the student is engaged (completing and submitting assignments), on pace (participating in the virtual classroom), or receiving academic/emotional support (directly from the teacher). If this isn't happening, your child will be counted absent. Please make sure that your child is submitting work and that you are communicating with the teacher daily. Thanks in advance for your help!
