What is new?

I miss the warmer weather but we have been lucky to not have many true winter cold days. I am ready for Spring and Royals baseball! :)

Tomorrow your child will begin bringing home books on their level that they can read throughout the week and return on Fridays. Every Friday they will get new books to bring home on Mondays. There is a sheet in the envelope that I will send home that I need for your child to write down the book they read on that night and tell me if they liked it or not, then you will sign off on it. When your child brings back their books they will receive new ones.

This Friday is our 100th day of school, it doesn't seem possible already. I sent a home last week talking about projects that you can do for this special day. We will rotate classrooms like we did for our Enrichment day and have different activities planned.

Just a reminder please send back the white envelope that the grade card was sent in so we have those for next quarter.

We have an eventful next few weeks at Bell Prairie, make sure and mark your calendars!

What we learned!

Readers Workshop-We have been focusing on "questioning" before, during and after in our texts. Earlier in the previous units we briefly touched base on inferring using our schema (what we already know). We dug deeper and were able to find answers in the text whether in the words or illustrations but learned that sometimes we can't find the answers. That is when inferring comes in and we have to use our previous knowledge to help us. This week we will be looking at informational text and practicing these skills.

Writers Workshop-Last week in writing they started their How To books. After planning we began writing in our books. We talked about how our books need leads: to help the reader know the topic, transitions: how we have to write it in ordinal words/numbers (first, next, then...) We will continue this week with the writer uses detailed photographs, genre specific, ending and language conventions.

Math Workshop-The spiral in math has taken us looking at decomposing numbers 11-19. The kids have really enjoyed looking at teen numbers in different ways.
