November 6-10 (School Day 53-57)
A Note From Me to You
Now, a new week with a new month and new 6-weeks grading period is underway! Everyone needs to start making plans that will keep this 6-weeks grading period on track. This is the period that can get off track very easily due to the holidays. There will be no excuses for students not continuing to make progress (great instruction), no excuses for parents not being informed of progress (sufficient grade reporting along the way), and no excuse for everyone not being fully informed about important events and valuable classroom tasks.
Here we go!! So keep Facebook alive. Post on your Twitter feed and tag @BransomBobcats. By the way I really appreciate your following our Facebook and Twitter.
FYI - Dave and I will continue pre-observation conferences and formal observations this week. Therefore, individual walk-throughs may be reduced a bit. We will still attend PLCs so if there is a change in the setting, let us know. Also, do not forget to share all PLC notes with both of us. The original agenda format needs to be entitled with the grade level and date. Thanks
Mr. Mason's Message
I have a triptych (3 panel) self portrait painting I did a few years ago and the images are me as a child, me as an adult and the last image is a skull and I titled it, “I should’ve, could’ve & would’ve”. These are all excuses we use regularly in our lives for a whole variety of reasons and for me it was about past regrets; or since we're being honest with each other here, making excuses. We are guilty of making excuses and most are made with good intentions: I’ll do it tomorrow. I don’t have time. I don't know how to do that. I’m too tired. I could keep going and going, but I think you get the point. We’re all human and it’s always easier to make an excuse to follow through with something. What’s the connection to the painting? The first image is me as a child (I should’ve), and it symbolizes all the excuses I employed for NOT taking advantage of opportunities in my youth. The second image is me as an adult (I could’ve), and it too represents using all the excuses in the world for not taking advantage opportunities. The final image is a skull (I would’ve), and although I am not dead yet, it represents an end of something and once the show ends, you cannot make any more excuses. The excuses for not taking advantage of opportunities I passed up as a child and presently as an adult can never be revisited, however, I can prevent future excuses from becoming my reality. Will you really do it tomorrow? Are you really that tired? How can you make time? YouTube, Pinterest and your colleagues are experts at learning how to do something, or better yet, just try. Why not?! Don’t get caught up in the should’ve, could’ve and would’ve trap and as Nike proclaims, “JUST DO IT”.
As someone smarter than me has said;
“Save the excuses. It’s not about having time, it’s about making time. If it matters, you will make time.”
Thankful Turkeys - Starting Monday, be on the lookout for a turkey to be delivered to your classroom. You will notice the turkey is really cute, but he has no feathers. You will have Monday and Tuesday to color and decorate your turkey, cut him out or give him a background and hang him outside your classroom door on the wall. But what about his feathers? His beautiful plumage of feathers will be in the teacher workroom. Please select as many beautiful feathers as you wish and write messages to staff members telling them why you are thankful for them. Then tape your feather to that staff members turkey. The messages can be anonymous or you can sign them. This is a tough time of year as we head towards Thanksgiving break a few kind words make the next few weeks that much easier.
Student Leadership - Thank you for the list of names you sent me for our new Student Leadership Group. I will be sending home information about the expectations of our SLG and will have a schedule created for rotations by the end of the week. The SLG rotations will begin Monday, November 13.

A COMPELLING SCOREBOARD displays progress toward the WIG in a SIMPLE and VISIBLE way with LABELED INFORMATION (Lead Measures and WIG) and displays CLEAR WINNING/LOSING DATA. Many of you have already started discussing how you want to display your data. You may choose a theme for your Reading and Writing WIGs. But remember to keep the Main Thing the Main Thing-student learning!
