1 Tsunamis that happened !
· On March 28, 1964 an extremely large earthquake (magnitude 8.4) struck Alaska. It caused tsunami waves that were very destructive in south-eastern Alaska, in Vancouver Island, Canada, and in the States of Washington, California and Hawaii. Waves ranged in size from 6 to 21 feet. The tsunami killed more than 120 people and damages costing more than $106 million. It was the costliest tsunami ever to strike the Western United States and Canada.
Places that are at risk for TSUNAMIS
The states are most at risk for Tsunamis they are California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington. Hawaii is at the greatest risk because they have about 1 tsunami a year and a dangerous tsunami about every 7 years.
How TALL THE WAVES CANE BE !!!!
Tsunami waves can reach heights of over 100 feet.
The first wave of a tsunami is usually not the strongest, waves get bigger and stronger
Tsunamis can travel at speeds of about 500 miles or 805 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as a jet plane.
In the deepest part of the ocean, tsunami waves are often only 1 to 3 feet tall. Sailors may not even realize that the tsunami waves are passing beneath them.
How its caused
A tsunami is a series of ocean waves caused by an underwater earthquake, landslide, or volcanic eruption.
A tsunami can be generated by a giant meteor impact with the ocean.
