Cardinal Coverage

Principal's Corner
Welcome to Cardinal Coverage for parents. This newsletter is intended to offer you valuable insight and tips into helping you and your student navigate the middle school years. Often, we as parents think about how it was “when I was in school!” Well, as we all know, times change and that includes education! We no longer teach students the way we did 20, 15, 10, or even 5 years ago! We take a more deliberate approach to each student instead of the teach to the whole class and hope they get it approach!! The articles in this newsletter have all been created by Landrum Middle School faculty and staff so they directly impact our students. These are not generic items but have been thoughtfully created with our specific students in mind. Please take a moment to read over this newsletter that will hopefully help all of us to make your child’s education better.
Athletic Spotlight with Coach Hill
Landrum Middle has teamed up with Jeremy Wood of NC/SC Realty to offer female and male players of the month for the 17-18 athletic seasons. Winners will be given a gift bag and announced during our morning news. Congratulations to our volleyball team on a 4-0 record so far this season.
The athletes on the football, volleyball, and cheer squads are enjoying their seasons so far. Coach Siary, Coach Hill, and Coach Arthur are helping to instill a positive work ethic in all of our athletes that will help them to be successful in all that they do. Remember that athletics is a good tool to help your child become more successful in life after school!

How Teenagers Can Benefit from Read Alouds
It’s a topic that’s been debated for as long as we can remember. Will reading aloud to our teeenagers hinder their learning and reading comprehension? When our children are younger, reading aloud to them from a very young age has proven to improve their literacy skills as they age. I sit down with my son each night before bed and we read a story, as I’m sure most of you have done as well. My son gets excited, he enjoys that quiet time we spend together, and he especially loves choosing his own book. Jim Trelease, author of The Read Aloud Handbook, suggests that reading aloud to students of any age helps them develop and improve their literacy skills involved with reading, writing, speaking, and listening. He also adds that since students tend to listen on a higher level than they read independently, listening to others read stimulates growth and understanding of vocabulary and language. So, let’s not stop reading to our babies, even when they’re not necessarily babies anymore. Reading promotes learning, and everyone always has more to learn!

Health Highlight - Nurse Kerchner
As the LMS School Nurse, I would like to help you help your students stay healthy and stay in school! And here are a few tips that might do just that:
⏩Review hygiene tips with the whole family to prevent the spread of infections. We’ve already started seeing strep throat and stomach bugs this year and the best way to keep this from coming home with your student is handwashing, handwashing, handwashing!!!
⏩Establish healthy bedtime and morning routines to ensure adequate and consistent sleep! Sleep is food for the brain and teenagers need 9 - 9 ½ hours sleep nightly.
⏩Good eating habits. Breakfast at school--no excuse to skip breakfast!! Eat together as a family as often as possible.
⏩Drink plenty of water!! Staying hydrated helps every part of the body function better!
All of the above help boost the immune system to fight off infections.
⏩Finally, know when to keep your student home--if your student has an infectious disease (something that can be spread to others) or if they simply feel too bad to take part in activities. If you aren’t sure if your student needs to stay home, please call me!
⏩Please check out the “Nurse News” on our LMS web page online for even more information: http://www.spart1.org/NurseNews.aspx
Career Connection with Mr. Siary
As your new Career Development Facilitator, I am here to serve students, parents, faculty and administrators in the ever changing world of employment. I will accomplish this task by conducting student interest surveys in order to glean as much information about our student body to help guide, teach and mentor those students interested in becoming a productive member of our society.
One of the tools I utilize to better serve our students is called SCOIS (South Carolina Occupational Information System) which enables me to help identify possible career opportunities for our students as well as track their interests over time. Feel free to check out the SCOIS website at www.SCOIS.net.
In closing, I look forward to this upcoming school year and the many wonderful hopes and dreams that our students may have about their future.
