PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE by Kayla Bell
Dear Families,
This year we have engaged in some incredible learning and collaboration during our Wednesday Early Release time. Those 90 minutes are so valuable to us and our learning. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your support. I also wanted to share with you a little information about what we have been working on since September. This week, I am going to share with you some highlights from kindergarten.
KINDERGARTEN LITERACY:
Earlier this fall, all grade levels, along with our special education and our English language development team, came together to collaboratively score narrative and informative writing. This joint work ensures that we are all viewing and assessing student work through the same lens. It also helps teams to connect to the learning above and below their own grade level. We plan to do this one more time with informational writing later this spring.
The kindergarten team has also spent considerable time preparing and implementing a new program called Words Their Way, which is designed to strengthen their Word Work in literacy.
They also participated in a video conference with Jennifer Seravallo. Jennifer Seravallo is a literacy expert and we use her materials in our literacy lessons. Having the chance to learn from her directly was a great opportunity for all staff.
Kindergarten teachers have also been ‘diving deep’ into the Writing Units of Study by Lucy Calkins. They have taken her lessons and brought ‘How To Books’ and many more units to life.
In reading, the team is using the Reading Units of Study by Lucy Calkins. As in writing, teachers use some of their early release time to engage in work with other kindergarten teachers from around the district to get a better understanding of the threads of learning embedded into each unit. Teachers also spend considerable time making sure that these materials meet the individual needs of students. When they feel that they do not, the team gathers other resources to support student learning.
SCIENCE:
Our kindergarten team has also been busy creating new science units using Mystery Science. They have also been collaborating with our Innovation Specialist to create a hands on learning experience where students learn about Force and Motion while creating simple machines.
MATH:
This year, we have a new math material adoption which has been designed to strengthen mathematical thinking. Planning for these new units is a year-long task and many hours have been used to organize lessons and gather materials for students.
Teachers have also collaborated together to create the math games for students to use.
LEARNING TEAMS:
At Nancy Ryles, we are continually assessing student work and student progress towards proficiency in the various subject areas. Approximately once a month, teachers review student data and they look for areas where students are not making growth. The team then creates a goal for student progress and then selects specific strategies and/or materials to use for a 3-6 week period. Teachers teach and then reassess students. This cycle continues all year long.
CULTURE and CLIMATE:
In kindergarten, the team spends a great deal of time teaching students how to be learners, how to be friends, how to play, how to share, and how to handle their big emotions. The team is strategic in making this happen and during one of our 90 minute release times they worked to create some specific social emotional lessons. Kindergarten is a BIG learning year!
The digital age is a part of kindergarten, and it is important to make sure our students know how to engage in the digital world. Digital Citizenship is one aspect of our K-5 curriculum. During one of our 90 minute early release days, the team aligned the digital citizenship lessons to the work they are currently doing in the classroom.
This is just a snapshot of the work our kindergarten team has done so far this year during our Early Release time. This time is used to collaborate as a team, with other kindergarten teachers, and with teachers in our own building. The team has also had the opportunity to connect with our district experts in technology, literacy, and math.
The goal of our Early Release time is to strengthen our skills in instruction and assessment. When we strengthen our skills we can better serve students.

STUDENT SURVEY
Student Survey
Each year the District surveys students, staff, and parents to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District's Strategic Plan.
The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. The data gathered from the survey are anonymous; your child will not put his/her name or other identifying information on the survey. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups. No individual data will be reported.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child does not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
A copy of the survey is available from your child's school and is posted at
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/district/research-reports
After reviewing the survey, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify the Nancy Ryles Office at 503-356-2400.

HEAD LICE INFORMATION
There have been a few isolated cases of head lice reported to the school recently. Head lice is a common condition. It is not associated with a lack of cleanliness or any particular life style.
Head lice should be suspected when there is intense itching of the skull and the back of the neck. The treatment for head lice consists of shampooing the hair with a head lice shampoo or applying a natural/alternative product that smothers the insect. Shampoos can be purchased at any pharmacy. There are also lice treatment salons in Beaverton.
The school office has information about the specifics of head lice treatment. The school would appreciate notification if your child gets head lice. This assists us in taking precautionary measures at school. All information is completely confidential.
OREGONSAFE TIPLINE
Creating a safe learning environment is a critical part of helping each child achieve academic success. SafeOregon is a statewide school safety tip line that gives kids, parents, schools and their communities a way to report safety threats or potential acts of violence. SafeOregon will give students another path for communicating with school administration when school safety incidents occur.
How does SafeOregon work?
Students, parents, and school staff can access SafeOregon through the web form on the SafeOregon website, or by text, email, live call and mobile app.
Why is there a need for a tip line system?
The number one reason why students do not report is the fear of retaliation from their peers. SafeOregon can be accessed from the privacy of a phone, home computer or other Internet equipped device, eliminating the possibility of being identified by another student and thus, decreasing the likelihood that a school safety threat would go unreported.
For more information, please visit the District’s SafeOregon Tipline webpage.
